What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ Somehow, the March Core update is still rolling. And no, this isn’t an outdated April Fool’s Joke. The general vibe is that if the update's been bad for you it's still getting worse and if it's been good for you it's still getting better. Hella fluctuations tho.

→ One interesting/troubling thing Glenn Gabe noticed: “Sites impacted heavily by several updates in the fall of 2023 started surging back for a number of queries with the March 2024 core update... But this past weekend, the situation reversed course.” Also, he says: “across 360+ sites impacted by the September HCU(X). None have recovered and most are down more since the March core update rolled out.” Oof.

→ Here’s another tale of woe: a retro gaming site that is on the brink of collapse after an 85% drop in organic traffic since late 2023, a content-heavy site that employs real experts to write real articles. Not Reddit enough, IMO.

→ Obligatory “Google saying to stop focusing on links so much” link. lol.

→ In case you haven’t considered the obvious, here’s a helpful article that gives 16 reasons why your page may not be ranking. Basically just the usual suspects, crawling blocks, indexing issues, internal links, and so on. Still, worth a look if you're in a pinch.

Social Media Round-up 📲

→ Here’s an interesting thread from the Threads content mines: Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, goes back and forth on why follower count isn’t everything, and explains why the platform’s reach issues aren’t the platform’s fault. lol. People aren’t convinced, to say the least.

→ On that note, Social Media Today asks: should social media platforms de-emphasize follower counts?

→ TikTok is fighting hard against the bill that would force a ban or a sell-off, with a $2.1 million TV ad buy.

→ Meta Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns just dropped a new audience insight and targeting option. Now, users who express interest in your stuff but haven’t yet bought- aka “Engaged Customers”- can be targeted.

→ Reddit mods keep removing Google Search Liaison’s posts. The saga continues. lol.

→ ICYMI: Reddit rolled out AI aimed toward ad creation in the form of "Smart Headlines," a "Creative Asset Cropper," and several bidding options to optimize your budgeting.

→ According to "the longest-running survey of digital media consumer behavior in America," Edison Research’s Infinite Dial Report, X (or Twitter) has seen a user decline of 22 Million, from 77 to 55 Million, or 30% YOY. Along with data on smart device usage, podcast audience, social media brand usage, and more, here’s the TLDR; on the state of Social Media platforms in America: "X/Twitter usage tails off dramatically; Facebook remains the overwhelming leader but among young Americans it's Instagram and TikTok."

Worth a look.

AI Insight 🤖

→ Ahrefs just put out a solid piece on how “Deep Content” might protect your SEO in the age of AI. In the article, Josh Hardwick argues that SEOs can adapt by prioritizing content about topics that AI can't answer well. "Deep" content about those topics that aren't quick or easy to answer.

The blindspot in AI is that it can tell us what to do, but not how to do it. The "how" has a sort of depth that AI just can't give. Besides this, he gives a few more reasons for going deep with your content: Deep content earns more backlinks and "Deep content is interesting… and that’s what Google wants."

Basically, users looking for in-depth, nuanced advice based on expertise will always have needs AI can’t quite fulfill, but good content can.

Worth a read.

→ The good news: users no longer need an account to use ChatGPT, and logging into the platform will be optional. Certain features (saved convos, for example) won’t be available to non-logged-in users, but it does make for a quick and easy way to consult the chatbot.
