Starter Story - i hate this question

I just got back from a weekend in NYC.

(my old stomping grounds)

I shared some meals with old friends, played some pickleball, and schvitz'd in a bathhouse.

I spent most of the weekend with my old friend Henry.

Henry has "made" it:

• Great job

• Six figure salary

• Just bought his own condo

But every time we see each other, it's the same old conversation...

Pat… I have everything I want in this job. But I don’t want to do it forever. I want something more.

Me: Yeah?

I think I finally want to start a business…

Me: Yeah??? LFG!!

BUT…

I'm still waiting on that right idea.

How do I find an idea that can really go the distance?

I paused after he asked this.

Suddenly, all of my excitement washed away.

In this moment, I knew not to answer this question.

Because I hate this question.

Why? Because this question has killed more entrepreneur's dreams than any other question I know.

See, here's the truth.

Henry is really smart and has a ton of skills.

People far dumber, younger and less experienced than him have started a successful business.

And these people... had very shitty ideas (to begin with).

If Henry wanted to, he could be really successful.

He just needs to get started on...

Something.

Anything.

But... what should he get started on?

In my opinion, the best thing you can do is surround yourself with successful founders and soak up their stories about their first ideas.

Once you do this, you'll realize that all of their ideas sucked at first.

And as you soak up this information, you'll realize something.

Successful businesses are not built on good ideas, they're built on far more boring stuff like strategy and distribution.
