An urgent message from The Intercept’s interim editor-in-chief

Amid a desolate landscape for journalism, it can be hard to see signs of hope. The Intercept is a rare example.

Yesterday was my first day on the job as The Intercept’s interim editor-in-chief.

I’ve spent the last decade working for daily newspapers — and watched with sorrow as some of my most talented colleagues have been laid off. Other local papers have shut down entirely: in 2023, an average of 2.5 every week.

Amid this desolate landscape for journalism, it can be hard to see signs of hope. The Intercept is a rare example.

This brilliant team of journalists has taken on ambitious investigations that others won’t touch — about Israel’s war on Gaza, the horrific dysfunction of our political system, and injustices that would otherwise never see the light of day.

I took this job so I can say “yes” to as much of this kind of fearless journalism as possible.

But I can’t do it without you.

As a nonprofit newsroom, we rely on the generosity of readers who share our commitment to challenging an unacceptable status quo. That’s why tonight’s campaign deadline is so important.

Right now, we’re still 350 people short of meeting our April goal to add 3,000 new monthly donors. Can you sign up today? Even $5 a month will make a huge difference.

If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
