What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ SERoundTable dropped the first major update on the Site Reputation Abuse Policy. Here’s what you gotta know:

- starting with only manual actions
- enforcement rolled out on May 6, not the advertised May 5
- Outlook India, TimesUnion, PostandCourier, and SFGATE completely deindexed

Pour one out.

→ Roger Montti just shared 5 factors to be aware of if you’ve been hit by the core update: "Algorithmic Losses Are Not Necessarily Persistent," "Recovering Is Not The Right Word," and "Thresholds And Ranking Formulas." On the one hand, reading what this guy says can't hurt and may contain some solid intel. On the other, he's an insider who takes JMu's word seriously.

This piece looks at how SGE is impacting SERPs, exploring an analysis of 500k queries, locating patterns and triggers enabling SGE results, and diving deep into a range of business verticals to reveal the impact of Google SGE on organic traffic.

Yes, you read that right: Google telling kidney stone patients to drink 2 quarts of urine per day.

AI Insight 🤖

→ Here’s basically everything we know about the OpenAI search engine that aims to go beyond Google. The TLDR:

- “OpenAI has been aggressively trying to poach Google employees”
- “The feature would allow users to ask ChatGPT a question and receive answers that use details from the web with citations to sources such as Wikipedia entries and blog posts”
- Sam A says ““I don’t think the world needs another copy of Google”

On the one hand, Altman hates ads. On the other hand, he likes money, and any rival to Google at this point is good news. Full article here if you sub to Bloomberg.

→ Here’s something interesting: many thought the search engine would be announced at this week’s OpenAI product reveal, but the event has been postponed.

→ Apple is planning to disrupt the AI sphere by dropping an “Intelligent Search” that will “summarize webpages.” Here’s the official announcement from Apple, which states “users will have the option to generate a brief summary of any webpage currently on screen. Apple’s built-in AI software can analyze the keywords and phrases within a webpage or document and generate a short summary containing only the most important information.”

As a professor in Advanced Digital Marketing at UCLA said: “No wonder Apple didn’t bother releasing their own search engine. They’re just about to kill the concept of the search engine entirely.”

The real deal, or just smoke and mirrors? We’ll be watching this one closely.

→ More stats that might sway you if you’re still skeptical re: whether you should be taking TikTok seriously as a search engine:

• “61% of TikTok users discover new brands and products on the platform, 1.5x more than other platform users”
• “Of those who were inspired to do something because of search on TikTok, 91% followed through and performed the action.”
• “1 in 2 TikTok users say they went to TikTok to research or learn more about new products or brands.”

Try not to think too much about what it says about the state of our society that TikTok could become the most popular search engine on the planet, just do what you can to cash in.

→ But will TikTok end up getting banned in the USA? Well, ByteDance is not going down without a fight.

→ Even though TikTok is the ultimate “here today, cringe tomorrow” app, it might not hurt your content creation to know the “most important trends to watch” in 2024. Trends include "Sad Hamster," "Deinfluencing," and "Silent Reviews." At the very least, it's good to know what weird s**t people are into rn.
