Mega-unicorn Canva highlights the private market landscape Down Under
Australia and New Zealand don't often show up on lists of top emerging private markets.

Those lists will generally be populated by the likes of Latin America, India, or Southeast Asia.

Right now, though, Australia has something that none of those other markets can claim: a $40 billion unicorn.

For VC especially, hopes of the next wave of growth are pinned on Canva ($40 billion valuation) and, to a lesser degree, Airwallex ($5.5 billion) providing two blockbuster exits in a young market.

Together, the two would help triple the total exit value realized by Australia- and New Zealand-based startups from 2015 through Q1 2024: $18.9 billion.

An exit from Canva ($40B) would be huge for the region.

For both PE and VC, the ability to create exit value has been a struggle. No year has produced more in exit value than has been invested during the same timeframe. The relatively small size of the region (combined population of around 31 million) adds challenges for driving returns through company expansion alone.

A greater importance is placed on margin and multiple expansion driving value growth for most companies and their investors.

While nascency alone adds to the intrigue, the region also offers investment within countries that have stable political regimes, developed economies, and strong financial systems, which are not always the case within the other emerging ecosystems.

And with large exits on the horizon, the potential coming wave of investors and capital should only further boost the market's image.

It's not unlikely that Australia and New Zealand will start showing up in conversations around top emerging private markets in the near future.

Commentary

Senior analyst Brendan Burke weighs in on Databricks' acquisition of Tabular at a price of more than $1 billion:

"This acquisition validates the opportunity for the composable data stack laid out in our data analytics launch report.

"Tabular commercialized Apache Iceberg, a NewSQL table format project that recently surpassed 5,000 GitHub stars with widespread adoption from tech giants. NewSQL extends the SQL query language to transactional databases that can support both relational and schema-free formats across highly scalable clusters.

"Databricks believes the project can provide a base layer for generative AI fine tuning yet the acquisition primarily resolves incompatible data table formats for Databricks' own lakehouse architecture.

"In the composable data stack niche, MotherDuck can become an independently large company by commercializing DuckDB."
