Book a discovery call with our friendly team today SPONSORS Friends, Q: What is the optimal time for a 2 hour event? A: Breakfast (8am-10am), After Lunch (1.30pm - 3.30pm) or After Work (6.00 - 8.00pm) I’ve been going to / supporting a number of these over the past few weeks and have thoroughly enjoyed each but wonder whether there is a optimal. Let me know by reply to this email or comment below, want to get a feel for what we think here - cheers! Thanks to: Joey NK Koksal, James Osborne, John Bersentes, Bas van de Haterd, Kevin Green, Dave Hazlehurst, Paul McCardle, Tom Williams, Dina Bay, Achyut Menon, Clair Mohamed and Eugène van den Hemel - your public support is noted and appreciated - cheers! What Do Brainfooders Think?Focus on TA is shifting from discovery to assessment, so interesting to see how we go about doing the assessing. No clear winners here, though behavioural assessments are in the lead. Might it be worthwhile breaking down what these assessment types actually mean? Let me know if this is worth doing a Brainfood Live on. Thanks to all who voted, now make sure you scroll to the bottom of the newsletter and vote on this weeks poll - cheers! Founders Focus - Ep 46 - Up close and personal with Roderick Smythe, CEO of Glyde Talent, Thurs 27th June, 2pm BSTFounders Focus series continues folks - week after week, we’re getting founder stories from entrepreneurs changing the way we hire today. Next up is a man who needs no introduction - Roderick Smythe, formerly CEO of the successfully exited TempBuddy and now back Glyde Talent. What drives the man to give this another go? Make sure o tune in - we’re on Thursday 27th June, 2pm BST. Register here Brainfood Live On Air - Ep261 - Skill Based Hiring, a Conversation with Johnny Campbell, CEO of Social Talent. Fri 28th June, 2pm BSTSkill Based Hiring is one of those concepts which we are going to get on board with, but have we done a good enough job of understanding what we mean by it? Special show this week, which emerged from a DM from Johnny who wanted an open conversation about what we’re doing in SBH. We’re on Friday, 28th June, 2pm BST Register here 1. The Strengths, Weaknesses and Blind Spots of ManagersGreat article on employee vs manager perception on the manager performance, especially on where the divergence is greatest - on employee recognition and feedback. Simple rule of thumb for managers, make sure you make public note of the good work your team is doing, especially the strong performers who might have fallen victim to their own consta-competence. H/T to brainfooder Michael Blakely for the share. CULTURE 2. How Does The Gender Pay Gap Vary Across Europe? What explains the gender pay gap in European tech? Turns out, it is mainly driven by the lack of women in senior roles. Compensation tech firm Ravio with the analysis from actual payroll data, with a country by country breakdown on pay equity laws. H/T to brainfooder Doug Wicks for the share D&I 3. AI Took Their Jobs. Now They Get Paid to Make it Sound HumanCopywriting is the most common use case for GenAI so it should come as no surprise that human copywriters are in the front line of AI disintermediation. Great article from the BBC chronicling how it looks like - layoffs, with a skeleton staff retained to oversea the AI (ironically to edit copy to make it sound more human), before they too end up on the scrap heap. If we do get disintermediated, this will be the flow. AI 4. Automated Screening Call For A Zookeeper Role...Conversations with brainfooder Max Armbruster are always great fun, but a couple weeks ago our Founders Focus interview turned into a fantastic demonstration of the future of automated candidate screening. This is me, applying to a job as a zookeeper and then being interviewed by Sam the robot, live and unscripted. It’s the inevitable future folks. ASSESSMENT 5. Doing Green Things: Skills, Reallocation, and the Green TransitionGreat report from RMI on the speed of energy transition, where greater efficiency (only 20% of fossil fuel consumption is converted into usable energy), lifetime return and global affordability brought on by China ‘overcapacity’, making it inevitable that the shift to a new energy future is well underway. Which, incidentally opens up new industries and new fields of work for people to do. Who has the best skills / background to transition across? Some answers here FUTURE OF WORK 6. The CHRO Trends Report 2024We love internal mobility but we know that every plus is a minus in a universe of finite energy. Interesting report here on the growth of first time CHRO’s - these are internal promotions going up to the top job - which also means decreasingly number of open opportunities for those CHRO’s out of work. IM a factor in how the job market is right now for senior TA / HR? I think so. CULTURE 7. Have We Hit Peak LinkedIn?It may be me revelling in the decline of civilisation but I couldn’t help but love everything about this - the crudity, the inevitable viral reward, any reach is good reach approach to content distribution. You just have to laugh 😆. H/T to brainfooder Matt Best for the share. CONTENT MARKETING 8. 3D Resume with Infinite ZoomWe all know that crazy creative resume’s are generally a bad idea as it breaks the primary directive of compatibility with ATS’s, but we’re all going to make an exception in this case, where Data Scientist Eric Moreu demonstrates his dazzling creativity and design flair with this immersive ‘infinite zoom’ CV. You won’t regret clicking on this. PERSONAL BRANDING 9. 28% of Paid Days Work in US are WFH DaysThe impact of the pandemic is a permanent shift to greater work flexibility, especially in digital industries, which, incidentally, also tend to cluster around metropolitan centres. Great report from WFH Research, the money shot being the image above - 28% of paid days work in the US is WFH, median avg is 2.2 days per week remote. Download report here REMOTE WORKING 10. AI is Already Changing Management - Companies Must Decide HowThought provoking article on the nature of management, especially in the era of ‘knowledge work’ where digital output such as email, spreadsheets, powerpoints and the like is the work. Managers use quantity and quality measures on these artefacts to assess performance so what happens when AI can produce it at scale? And, even more importantly, what is the point of this ‘work’? Easy read, must read. Do it alongside this conjecture from Box CEO Aaron Levie on how AI will solve the too much data problem in enterprise CULTURE The Podcasts11. What Men (& Women) Need to Know About The MenopauseSuper important interview by Steven Bartlett with menopause researcher Dr Mindy Pelz. We did a Brainfood Live last year on state of menopause recognition in the corporate world and a shockingly low number of companies even had a policy. Our economic system needs to recognise the reality of humanity and respond accordingly. Must listen D&I 12. What Makes Something Memorable (or Forgettable)? We know we’re living in a world where memes are more impactful than facts….but perhaps it has always been this way? Fascinating podcast on what makes something memorable: big lessons here for EB, networking, career security and the rest. H/T to brainfooder Bas van de Haterd for the share. EMPLOYER BRANDING 3. Turning Your LinkedIn Brand Into A Sales Machine, with Robin ChoyI wanted to listen to this as soon as I saw brainfooder Robin Choy was actually going to be the guest. He’s been brilliant at using LinkedIn to amplify his brand, and by doing so, capture leads for this recruitment tech platform, HireSweet. Well worth a listen for all us of here - brand building is a critical component of future engagement in an Gen-AI dominated world. CONTENT MARKETING End NoteOne of the suggestions that emerged from an industry dinner I attended last was the idea that networking would not only become more important for TA / HR professionals going forward, but also more difficult as GenAI comms erodes trust in first contact. Got me thinking….how do we rate our own networking skills? Topic of the vote today friends - let me know what you think below 👇
