“Angel Miners & The Lightning Riders” is the brainchild of Aaron Bruno, frontman for AWOLNATION. The imagery and mythological storytelling alone on this record could fuel a semester long seminar, so I will not even attempt to get into it here. Their sound straddles many different genres, and is an increasing argument against genre definition in the first place. You will hear passionate hard rock, grungy blues punk, electropop, and even cinematic guitar riffing. After listening, there is no doubt that the mind of Bruno is a breeding ground for masterpiece.

Ron Pope can transport listeners to a different time period. His sound alone can do this, but add lyrics like “Drove a 1983 Dodge Aries Wagon with no A/C down that old New York thruway” and this effect is set in stone. His studio album, “Bone Structure” is full of words of Americana wisdom; interlaced with slide guitar, well executed harmonies, and acoustic goodness. Some of the album seems addressed to his young daughter, telling her “Flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood, only part of me I’ve ever loved.”

In the modern age, it is increasingly difficult to find bands with a truly distinctive sound. Many acts are recycled versions of a “popular formula”, but Future Islands is the complete opposite of this. Their synth-pop style, combined with Samuel T. Herring’s unique voice/tone create a dynamic combination. Their lyrics are calculated and meaningful, providing lines such as “You spend your whole life wishing and working, all you get is the end of the rope”.

The NFL draft presented a timely short video before the start of the draft last week, and it involved Peyton Manning speaking about hope. The song playing in the background was "Hope" by Faith Evans and Twista, which is from Evans's 2005 album, "The First Lady". In the first verse, Twista says, "Wish I could go deep in a zone, and lift the spirits of the world with the words within this song." Although the situations in the song are not identical to ours now, almost 15 years later, this is exactly what he did (along with Evans); giving hope to those who are desperately looking for it.
