What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ Despite huge investments in natural language processing and AI, the Google propaganda network Search Off The Record podcast mentioned that Google still struggles with search queries that: 1) contain the word “not” and 2) involve prepositions.

So, as the article explains, a search like “shoes not made in China” won't necessarily bring users to shoes not made in China, because it can't make sense of what the "not" means in context. The same applies to prepositions, with queries like “restaurants with outdoor seating” or “hotels near the beach."

Marketers working with long-tail keywords should keep this in mind.

→ ICYMI: the week-long Spam update is over, having focused on eliminating “automatically generated content aimed solely at improving search rankings,” “purchased or sold links intended to manipulate rankings,” “thin, duplicated, or poor-quality content,” and “hidden redirects or other deceptive techniques.”

→ This list of SEO terms for dummies, or “SEO concepts explained in business terms,” is worth reading if you’re in marketing but don’t quite get SEO, or if you’re in SEO but struggle to explain what you do to normies. “Broken pages and redirects,” “on-page SEO,” “page speed,” and “internal and external links”... the whole gang is here!

→ Meta ad buyers beware: beginning July 1, Apple’s 30% fee on Facebook and Instagram ad purchases made through iOS devices goes global. Take action now, as this will impact your digital advertising budget allocation and strategy— unless you just stop doing it through your iOS device, lol.

→ Did you know YouTube has a blog? I didn’t, until I started writing this newsletter. Anyway, one section of this edition stood out as worth sharing— the question “Why do my videos occasionally pop off and get more views only to die down again?” got a pretty informative answer:

“The algorithm never gives up on a video. So, even after a video has been out for a while and everyone who was initially recommended it either clicked or passed, the algorithm can and does keep offering it to more viewers who it thinks might be a match.”

Next time you make fire content that doesn’t catch right away, remember— that YT algo won’t quit you.

→ Speaking of YouTube, the platform made up “nearly 10% of all viewership on connected and traditional TVs in the U.S” in May 2024. That’s apart from streaming on computers and phones, btw.

→ This YouTube report on the nature of fandom in 2024, especially w/ Gen Z, explores how fandom impacts content creation. Here’s the TLDR;

- 80% of fans use YouTube to consume content about the person or thing they’re a fan of at least weekly
- 65% of Gen Z respondents consider themselves to be “creators”
- 8% of Gen Z would describe themselves as “professional fans” who earn money from their creation

So, “between trends, memes, fancams, explainers, reaction videos, fan art, and hour-long video essays, fan content often extends well beyond its source material and attracts its own fans in the process.”

So. Step 1? Get some fans. Then, follow what your fans are creating and be responsive to what they’re passionate about.

Big news: “the glue is back”

→ Man, Microsoft’s head of AI just said the quiet part loud. saying that he believes all content on the open web is "fair use" and "freeware," and that "anyone can copy it, recreate with it, reproduce with it." His source: "the social contract."

Totally unrelated— have I mentioned that Microsoft and its competitors are facing multiple lawsuits re: copyright infringement via AI. Perplexity likely getting sued too, BTW, by Amazon.

→ Speaking of sketchy AI action— not only does Quora have a chatbot called Poe (news to me, tbh), Poe users (Poe-sers? idk) are using the platform to download paywalled articles and read them for free. Poe-sers rise up.

→ Here’s a potential AI Headline of the Week: “Bing People Also Ask Now May Include AI-Generated Content.” AI-generated “People Also Ask” seems funny, but as @rustybrick brutally puts it: “This can go really bad, I suspect, in some cases. But if no one is looking, then it doesn't really matter.”

Ice cold.

→ Stale Diffusion 3’s launch is being described as so “disastrous” that it could “change the AI landscape forever” because, among other things, the model is “so bad at generating human bodies users asked if it was “supposed to be a joke.”

Interesting note— the reason the platform is so bad at generating human bodies? They stopped using porn as training data…

… For now… maybe stick with Midjourney or DALL E?
