What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ At least one guy is still following the impacts of the HCU, and he’s still found 0 recoveries among the almost 400 sites he’s tracking (many of which are down 98%).

Google keeps trying to dig itself out of this and promises that the next core update will lead to some recoveries. Believe it when I see it, IMO.

→ Search Engine Land’s “13 SEO takeaways from Google’s Elizabeth Tucker at SMX Advanced” is… maybe worth a read? NGL, there’s a lot of the usual fluff that comes from Google's talking heads, like "focusing on the big picture" and some excuses around this or that core update being a chaotic mess.

But some of it is interesting. For example, "How Google defines low quality” (accuracy, talent, skill, page experience, and - you guessed it- E-E-A-T) and “what causes radical fluctuations in Google Search rankings.” Also worth noting: she refused to discuss the API documentation leak, lol.

→ Honestly, seems like Google is just straight-up trolling SEOs most of the time these days. Click through to see why “what’s going on with search results for queries with the acronym “SEO” is in a class by itself and has to be seen to be believed.” Basically, a huge group of keyword phrases that are related to the word “SEO" are leading to a non-profit called “Sponsors for Educational Opportunity.” SEJ suspects it’s because “​​a relevance factor is not kicking in,” but why isn’t it kicking in? Anyone’s guess.

AI Insight 🤖

→ This is a pretty smart thinkpiece on some of the issues in the world of AI-generated content. Mainly, it asks: “How do we build mass-market products that change the world around a technology that gets things ‘wrong’?” and dives deep into the problem of hallucinations.

→ Speaking of… ICYMI: this is a pretty thorough guide to AI-generated content, weighing all the pros and cons. TLDR; the pros include time & cost savings, scalable production, and consistent output, while the cons include lack of originality, low quality, and copyright issues.

Social Media Round-up 📲

→ TikTok’s newest tactical move to overtake Google is a funny one: image search capabilities. Currently available in the United States and Southeast Asia, it’s a lot like the Google reverse image search, enabling users to “take or upload a photo to find similar products in TikTok Shop.”

→ A new TikTok report emphasizes “Maximizing Your 'Return on Creative” and describes how "compelling content drives business results." The TLDR is that Creating and Diversifying Empathetic Content that "embraces resonance" unlocks a lot of "creative value" which leads to some powerful returns.

Don't believe them? Well, the numbers are compelling for sure: "48% of users said an ad was not intrusive after seeing an organic post from the brand" and "79% of TikTok users prefer brands that understand how to create content specifically for the platform."

→ After basically a year of waiting, YouTube finally dropped its “Test & Compare” (aka A/B Testing for thumbnails) feature.

→ YouTube is also testing its AI comment sorting function, which “uses AI to detect common themes within video comments, then automatically sorts them into those categories,” on Shorts.
