July 1st was Conference Realignment Day across D1, with many schools officially becoming members of their new leagues, like Texas and Oklahoma with the SEC.

At the mid-major level, schools from the NEC to the Southland posted social graphics of their new homes, and conferences updated their websites.

For the WAC, one of the historically most transient leagues in D-I, that meant their website now looks a teensy bit smaller. UTRGV and Stephen F. Austin are now official members of the Southland Conference, leaving the WAC with just nine full members.

But in 2025, Seattle and Grand Canyon will leave for the WCC, leaving the beleaguered WAC with just seven schools: Abilene Christian, Cal Baptist, Southern Utah, Tarleton State, UT Arlington, Utah Tech, and Utah Valley.

A few months ago, it looked as if this might finally be the end of the WAC. Industry sources have told me that virtually all the remaining seven institutions have taken calls from other conferences, with a few going so far as to receive site visits from other leagues. One industry source told me that at least two current WAC schools have “a committable offer, so to speak” to join other leagues.

But, as of July 2, nobody else has budged.

Why? Are schools waiting for better offers to materialize, or are they going to make a real go of sticking around and rebuilding the league? What is the WAC’s sales pitch for schools to stay in the league?

I asked around over the last few days. Here’s what I’ve learned:
