Forbes - What To Know About Remdesivir

A lot of new information came out today about a drug called remdesivir that can potentially treat COVID-19. Three new studies came out; one from China, one from the National Institutes of Health, and one from Gilead, the company that manufactures the drug. What does all this new info mean? Much if it is still preliminary, but two of the studies found that remdesivir can help COVID-19 patients and shorten the length of time in the hospital. Dr. Anthony Fauci said today that the drug will be the “standard of care.” But there are some caveats. The Gilead trial didn’t have a placebo, which is important for measuring the effect of the drug. And the Chinese paper published in The Lancet found no benefit to remdesivir at all. More data will be coming out in the next few weeks, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
