After the deadly coronavirus wave many European countries endured last month, some are starting to slowly restart “normal” life. Spain has its lowest coronavirus death toll in 6 weeks, and is finally easing some of its harsh lockdown restrictions. Italy is similarly lightening up on its quarantine, as more than 4 million Italians return to work this week. In the UK, the government is still figuring out ways to get people safely back to work; some of the ideas they’re considering include staggering work start times and allowing more people to work from home. Meanwhile in the U.S., more states are also opening up workplaces; but that may not be a good thing. A new model predicts that the country could see up to 3,000 deaths a day by June if we continue on our current trajectory. To put that in perspective: if nothing changes, more people could soon be dying of coronavirus each day than the total casualties of the 9/11 terror attacks.
