From a Stagnant Swamp to a Flowing River

Hey writers,

Think about your past month. How much information have you taken in? Articles, books, podcasts, Tweets, video clips. Picture all of it.

Now ask yourself: What have you created in the past month?

If you’re like most, you have a river of information flowing into your mind, but little flowing out.

When you only consume and don’t create, you stagnate. With nowhere to flow, the information in your mind turns stale. Your mind becomes a murky swamp of ideas.

You keep taking in new information, but because you're not putting anything out, your ideas are trapped. Eventually, there’s a clog. Too much in, not enough out. Darkness ensues.

In contrast, imagine a flowing river with crisp, oxygen-filled water, brimming with life — the kind of water you flock to in the summer. When you’re writing, the ideas in your head have somewhere to go. Your mind becomes a clear river of ideas, flowing through you and into the world. This freedom-state is available to you. We assure you.

When your mind is a stagnant swamp, it’s impossible to see even two feet in front of you. Your feet are stuck in the mud, and all you can focus on is the lifelessness surrounding you.

Writing is your way out of the muck and into clear water. Consistent writing gives you a regular output of ideas to help your mind flow like a mountain brook.

It’s the human instinct to create, to put things into the world. But when we’re bloated by too much junk in, and not enough writing out, we inflict pain on ourselves.

The author Elizabeth Gilbert says it well: “Any talent, wisdom, or insight you have that you don’t share becomes pain.” The swamp. The clog. Can you feel it?
