Gaming Blockchains Abound 🎮

New blockchains are not a new thing. But it seems their creation and launch has been accelerated, particularly in regards to gaming focused chains.

The Immutable zkEVM launched earlier this year, already attracting a steady crowd. And other chains such as Blast and Boss chain are now live also, just beginning their ramp up with additional services and apps.

On top of that we have recent announcements about Soneium, a blockchain being built by Sony, Apechain, the long-promised layer-2 solution from the Bored Ape Yacht Club, and Geist network, a ‘members-only’, layer3 blockchain built by the team behind Aavegotchi.

Gaming has become such a large part of the web3 space, that developers are creating entire chains to appeal to the gaming industry!

Fear and Doubt in the Web3 Gaming Industry 😱

While gaming development has remained pretty steady, despite various market turmoil, there are growing signs of fear and doubt in some of the communities.

We’ve seen some games closing shop such as Tales of Ellaria, or simply abandoning their web3 features, such as Dimensionals. Zynga has also backed out of their blockchain gaming commitment, selling Sugartown to a new development company called D20.

Just a couple of months ago the Deaddrop community was rocked by a scandal involving DrDisrespect. The hullabaloo from that event seems to have died down for the most part, but now, new worries have been raised about specific games.

Rumors are spreading that Illuvium is suffering financial trouble and has a hard deadline to show profit. And Shrapnel has seen the sudden departure of several key team members, potentially due to ongoing lawsuits that have embroiled the company for the past year.

Is this a sign of things to come? Or is it just another shake-out that often comes with emerging industries?
