Imagine you are Jay-Z for a second. You turn on the TV and hear your voice in an animated film, but you trip out because you don’t recall participating in the production of this film. So you hop in your car to go meet your lawyer in person, and as you begin driving, on the radio you hear a commercial using your voice to sponsor a product. At this moment you’re thinking someone must be playing a sick joke or somehow you’re inside a Black Mirror episode. Turns out, there’s no joke being played! Someone has actually created an AI version of Jay-Z using a text-to-speech model trained on Jay-Z’s speech patterns. Of course Roc Nation is not happy about this so Jay finds himself in another legal battle. To further examine the situation, our friends/lawyers Margarite Camaj and Margaret Lee believe copyright infringement exists in this case and they’ve broken down why it is unlawful. “I got 99 problems but a deepfake ain’t one.”
Ludacris and Nelly were the latest artists to host a Verzuz battle on Instagram Live. If you missed it, we’ve got you covered with the full playlist. We also recommend giving a spin to the ChopNotSlop remixed version of Megan Thee Stallion’s SUGA album.
