Less than 2 percent of our readers donate. And that’s a problem.

It’s that select fraction of readers stepping up and voluntarily chipping in who enable us to investigate and expose the secrets that governments and powerful corporations would rather keep hidden.

Millions of people read The Intercept to get the adversarial investigative journalism that other news outlets simply can’t or won’t do.

But every month, less than 2 percent of those readers make a donation — and that’s a problem.

Right now, we need an urgent influx of funding to support our nonprofit newsroom. We’ve set a goal of raising $400,000 by September 30, and we have just one day left.

That’s why we’re asking you today: Please make a donation to join the less than 2 percent who make The Intercept’s journalism possible.

If everyone who got this email donated $5, we’d be all set and could stop sending fundraising emails.

But it’s that select fraction of readers stepping up and voluntarily chipping in who enable us to investigate and expose the secrets that governments and powerful corporations would rather keep hidden.

We’re incredibly proud that we’ve been able to accomplish so much without charging a subscription fee or selling advertising on our website. But let’s be clear: If people don’t pay for journalism, it will disappear.

So if you value The Intercept and can afford to chip in, please donate $5 to help meet our urgent goal of raising $400,000 by Monday.
