Sophus Helle on Enheduana

“War is unheroic in Enheduana’s poems. It is not a place of achievement but a place of loss, tragedy and destruction, where humans figure almost exclusively as victims,” writes celebrated translator Helle, who comes back to the Academy by popular demand!

Two sessions: October 9 & 16
2:30–3:45 p.m. EDT
Live over Zoom with recordings available

Edward Mendelson on W.H. Auden
“Auden was fascinated by the unsolvable problem of how much of life is governed by necessity and how much is chosen through freedom. Are we simply compelled to change the course of our lives or do we choose when to make that change?,” writes Mendelson, Lionel Trilling Professor in the Humanities at Columbia.

Two sessions: October 21 & 28
6:30–7:45 p.m. EDT
