Why We Overestimate One Year And Underestimate 10 Years

Farmers know you can’t grow a tree in a year. But for some reason, we fade out the logic of down-to-earth farmers.

Pocketing $10 for mowing lawns? Please. That’s so last decade. Today’s teens are raking in serious cash from their bedrooms, no sweat. According to research by Whop, there’s at least one kid in every U.S. high school making over $10k a year from side hustles, all without even putting on real pants.

Back in the day, running lemonade stands and delivering newspapers used to be the staple gigs to earn extra pocket-money. Now, newspapers are obsolete and 42% of teens are getting paid online. Research suggests that one in every 625 kids is making thousands by the time they hit the last bell. What’s more is that some of these hustlers are as young as 12. 

And no, they’re not really influencers. They don’t brag millions of followers. They’re just finding ways to flip stuff. Like selling old kicks, streaming games and earning for in-game currency. 

Top money-making gigs include:

1. Selling clothes, footwear, or apparel accessories — 16.69% of teens
2. Streaming video games — 10.09%
3. Earning in-game currency — 10.79%
4. Video game tournament prizes — 9.20%
5. Product reviews — 8.75%

But it’s not just about social media access or the pressure of being famous online. One study conducted last month revealed that 72% of Gen Z workers have zero interest in climbing the corporate ladder or becoming managers. They don’t want to deal with toxic managers, work cultures, office politics or late-night work. Instead, they’d rather stick to doing their own thing or focus on building their personal brand. 

Maybe that’s why “founder” is now the second fastest-growing job title among Gen Z grads on LinkedIn.

Spendings

The 2024 election cycle is on track to smash spending records, with an estimated $15.9 billion expected, surpassing the previous $15 billion set in 2020, according to OpenSecrets. Outside spending, driven by super PACs that can accept unlimited donations, is set to exceed $5 billion, already hitting $2.6 billion—a billion more than at this point in 2020.

However, when adjusted for inflation, 2020 still holds the spending crown, partly due to Michael Bloomberg’s $1 billion campaign blitz. With razor-thin polls, both presidential candidates are scrambling for every dollar. But it’s not just the top race—over 800 congressional candidates have raised an average of $1.4 million each, as running for office becomes ever pricier post-Citizens United.
