You Can’t Afford to Be Ignorant

When Napoleon said “War is 90% information,” he might as well have been talking about small business. Cause while we aren’t about to conquer Europe here, every Main Street deal is similarly a battle of intel. 

Walk into a negotiation blind — without understanding the market, the state of the business, or the quirks of the industry — and you might as well be waving a white flag.

Blind bets are for suckers. Information will make or break your acquisition. And mostly, know that ignorance isn’t just expensive; it’s a potential financial death sentence. So take a page from the old general and arm yourself before you march into battle.

Do Your Due Diligence ("Do Due," as the kids like to call it)

Before you even think about putting in an offer, study the market. How’s the industry trending? What are local competitors doing? What challenges are unique to this business?

Know the Financials Inside and Out.

Don’t just glance at the P&L. Dive deep into cash flow, debt, and recurring revenue streams. A few bad months can be enough to tip the scales.

Understand the Business’s Operational Headaches.

Every business has skeletons in the closet — whether it’s employee churn, outdated equipment, or inefficient processes. Know what you’re walking into and have a plan to fix it.

The Dirty Truth About Cleaning Businesses

When it comes to buying a small business, especially in the cleaning industry, the challenges can get messy fast.

Before you jump into the cleaning space, take note of these 3 key lessons from our members who have been there, scrubbed that, and lived to tell the tale.

Background: Aaron recently reviewed a cleaning business that, at first glance, looked great: diverse revenue streams like window cleaning, blind replacement, gutter cleaning, and even holiday lights.

Problem: Employee turnover was killing the business. Keeping staff for more than a few months was a constant struggle — and ultimately, the owner was selling because he couldn’t solve the problem.

Lesson: If you can’t keep good employees, expect major headaches.

Background: John, a first-time buyer, jumped into a cleaning franchise and quickly learned the industry’s secret: it’s all about managing your workforce.

Problem: He discovered hidden opportunities for growth, like deep-cleaning jobs and post-construction work, but realized the real challenge was keeping labor costs in check.

Lesson: His franchise provided helpful tools for managing hiring and day-to-day operations, but even with that support, in the cleaning business, controlling labor costs is the key to profitability.

Problem: He hit a classic roadblock early on — B2B payments take time. Unlike B2C, where cash comes in immediately, in B2B you could be waiting 30, 60, or even 90 days for payments.

Lesson: Build plans to have enough working capital on hand for things like delayed payments, or risk a serious cash crunch.
