For a fall spent outdoors

Photos: Wirecutter Staff

Fall weather is beautiful … but fleeting. Soon, this just-chilly-enough air will succumb to winter and a biting cold that makes us reminisce about when we could go outside without 17 layers on.

While having the right outdoor gear and clothing can’t literally slow down time, it can help you extend this season by keeping you comfortable outside. Even as the weather starts to dip a bit more, the right jackets, a puffy blanket, or a thermos of something warm can allow you to spend a few extra weeks this year hiking, hammock-swinging, bird watching, and more. Here are a few of our favorite fall essentials:

  • A down jacket that won’t make you look like the Michelin Man: After hiking more than 300 miles, our experts found the best down jacket: It’s lightweight, warm, and weather-resistant. And it packs down small, making it a dream to travel with.
  • An (under-$100!) cashmere sweater we love: You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great sweater. This relatively inexpensive one punches way above its weight—it’s soft, supple, and beautifully constructed with a classic look.
  • The hiking boots that let a first-time backpacker enjoy the trek: If your fall plans include any hiking, editorial director Jason Chen calls our top-pick hiking boots “the best purchase I’ve made this year.” They’re stabilizing, comfortable to wear on hikes of any length, and inoffensive enough to wear around town.
  • Some toasty base layers: The right thermal underwear can wick perspiration away from your skin to prevent you from getting chilly when you sweat. We have a few recommendations that are breathable and warm—whether you’re wearing them alone or layering under a jacket.
  • A carry-it-everywhere chair: Reliable seating means you can stay comfortable at the park or soccer sidelines for longer. (No cold, wet backsides here—thank you very much!) Our staffers swear by this portable camping chair that fits into a tote bag and sets up in under a minute.

Plus: Soft, stretchy leggings we love

These leggings are so smooth, stretchy, and comfortable that they’ve become our go-to for casual everyday wear. In our tests, the waistband didn’t pinch and actually stayed put, and the matte fabric paired perfectly with a T-shirt or a cozy cardigan. As our experts put it: “Lounging in them just felt right.”

Right now, new customers can use promo code WIRECUTTER to get a pair for $15.

One last thing: Bake some cookies

If you cook or bake at all (which we think fall is the perfect season for), you should own a solid baking sheet or two. They’re great for roasting vegetables, making pizzas, toasting nuts, or cooking a quick sheet-pan dinner. And most importantly, perhaps, baking cookies.
