What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ How’s this for a headline: “Nightmare on Affiliate Street.” A little on the nose, but it gets the point across. Forbes Advisor, Fortune Recommends, APNews Buyline, and other major affiliate players are finally starting to face some fraction of the penalties that small publishers were clapped with ages ago.

FWIW— the article originally speculated that because some of these drops are algorithmic, it’s possible that algorithmic site reputation abuse penalties are being tested. But because Google then responded to the article and directly denied this claim, it seems "the drops are from other changes that Google is pushing that must be impacting those affiliate directories strongly."

→ Google just dropped some new “Google Trends” documentation, explaining how its Explore and Trending Now tools can be used to monitor specific and general trends, perform keyword research, create a content calendar, benchmark against your industry, analyze brand awareness and sentiment, and more.

→ The new Google Analytics update includes a Shared Segment Library, Enhanced Permissions, Segment Management Tools, and Audience Creation. For more on what these are and how to use them, you know the drill... click through.

Social Media Round-up 📲

→ YouTube’s affiliate program has partnered with Flipkart and landed in India, “letting uploaders tag products in their videos and earn referrals.” If your channel is listed in the partner program and you have at least 10K subs, this is right up your alley.

→ Speaking of YouTube, the Creator Insider just dropped a bunch of updates, but the most interesting has to do with real-time tracking w/ format filtering. Performance analytics can now be filtered into Long-form, Shorts, and Live Streams, allowing you to analyze and organize data filtered by content type in real time.

→ He may be cringe, but Neil Patel’s crew does dig up some good data. In this case, he evaluates social media platforms by Product Discovery potential. The rankings? From highest to lowest in terms of lifetime value: YouTube, then Facebook, then Instagram, then TikTok.

→ Oh yeah— watch out for this: Meta quietly adds ‘automatic adjustments’ to ad accounts. Basically, Meta's ad system has been empowered to make changes- including pausing and activating, adjusting budgets, consolidating ad accounts and audience segmentations, and more- to ad campaigns without needing your approval, or even notifying you.

→ The absolute state of things… 4 of 10 young adults in the USA are “regularly getting news on TikTok.” Trend-wise, this figure has more than doubled since 2020.

→ ICMYI: Reddit’s AI-powered keyword targeting features could be a game-changer if you’re doing the Reddit thing.

AI Insight 🤖

→ OpenAI’s Orion, aka GPT-5, is rumored to be around 100 times more powerful than GPT-4 and might drop “by December.”​

→ Breaking news: another AI start-up getting sued by a news corporation. This time, News Corp is taking on Perplexity.

→ Speaking of Perplexity, this profile covers a lot of ground, including the DL on when Perplexity will be incorporating ads into its search results, with a plan to “share revenue with content publishers in a manner inspired by Spotify.”

→ Meta may have moved away from news content, but Meta’s AI will now be plugged into Reuters to provide “answers to user queries about news” and “will cite Reuters' stories and link out to its coverage.”

→ Yahoo is partnering with McAfee, using its deepfake image detection capabilities to ensure that news photos have not been generated or altered by AI.

→ Not to be outdone by Google’s AI Overviews, Bing is adding its own AI-enhanced Search summaries. Google sets the lowest bar in the world with this stuff, but Bing does have a funny ability to somehow not clear it. lol.
