Trevor McKendrick - Wake up & go directly to work

Hi all,

I’ll be at Money2020 today and tomorrow. If you’re there too, Godspeed & good luck.

McKay Coppins interviewed BYU’s Jewish quarterback (tweet)

As I like to say every year: I’m a BYU fan until they lose. And so far this year, against all odds, they haven’t lost.

I also learned that it was the quarterback himself who made up the name BYJew.

What it’s like to work on a mega yacht (article)

The most she made was $120k per year, which was higher than I expected.

Question: I could never be the type of person to have a ton of people redo a bunch of work because my whim just changed. But there’s one story here where they had to set up an inflattable slide which is apparently a ton of work, and then the owner decided they didn’t want to use it there anyway. I’d have a hard time making people change their work a lot.

Finally, the question: is that an impediment to doing great work and/or becoming rich?

”Do not use the word ‘status’” (twitter thread)

“It is a poor substitution for “Honor” and “esteem.”

This reframed how I think about status. We should change to thinking about the idea of status as a verb moreso than as a noun.

It’s something you do, and something that can be done to you, not just something you have.

Wake up & go directly to work (tweet)

“Something I've been trying recently: wake up and go directly to work. Do not check anything - no messages, no emails, no news, no nothing. There's something destructive / distracting about checking the outside world that I don't fully understand. It loads my RAM with a ton of distractors and my attention can't focus properly and fully on the highest priority work item. After a few hours, get lunch and optionally gather world state.” (emphasis mine)

This resonated so strongly with me…. whenever you’re in builder mode, just ignore the world every day until you get your creating done for that day. He described it so well, somehow it’s so much easier to get distracted once you’ve loaded your brain up with the Information Of The Day.

Just ignore it, it will be there later always, and honestly you should probably just ignore it then too.

Notes from the Progress Studies Conference (article)

Scott Alexander’s review. Wish I had been able to attend. Next year!

The most opinionated man in America (article)

I find it sometimes hard to know what Mike Solana from Pirate Wires actually believes, this brought clarity.
