Remote Learning Weekly - Counting down the weeks...

Issue #7

Weekly Top Ten Resources for Remote Teachers & Learning from Home

Memorial Day has passed, and summer is now officially underway. No matter how crazy things might be in the world, nothing dampens the glee that both students and teachers feel about the impending summer vacation 🎡. Maybe you’ve got a couple more weeks of Zooming, maybe you’re already in the midst of in-service days, or have report-writing still to get through, but it’s coming... you can feel it in the air, right?

With summer on the way, do you still need a weekly Top Ten with tips and resources? Of course you do! Because no matter what time of year it is, being a teacher is who you are. This Top Ten will never tell you what to do — rather, it’s focused on invigorating you. Why? Because educators deserve unending respect.

So put your feet up, your grade book down, and read on!

🤯 Self-Care for Educators

  1. We hate to give teachers a worksheet, but here’s a good one for grounding exercises. We all need help finding our center these days. ☯️
  2. Here’s a pick-me-up that will truly make everything better, every time. And ‘tis the season, after all. 🏕️

💻 Teaching in the Time of COVID

  1. Which type of distance-teaching teacher are you? Watch this video caricature and let us know! (and speaking of mastering technology, have you seen this guy trying to teach his mom to use Zoom? Dude, in any language, we feel your pain! 😆)
  2. If you’re thinking about the layers of complexity with respect to reopening schools in a culturally responsive manner, here’s an in-depth presentation from NYU’s School of Education that offers guidance.
  3. If you prefer spirited discussion and engagement with colleagues about reopening, rather than reading a report, register for this webinar (and request a fee waiver if you need one!) Act quickly because it’s happening tomorrow, May 27, at 3p.
  4. If you’re still teaching and want some inspiration for the day-to-day, don’t neglect NSTA’s Daily Do. There are endless, fascinating topics with clear teaching structures. Science not your subject? Check out this excellent list of crowd-sourced ELA resources. 📖

🤪 Parenting while Working Remotely

  1. Are you seeing signs of anxiety in your kids, or just want a daily practice to help center them? Here’s a fun, age-appropriate grounding exercise. Try it before breakfast and get the day off on the right foot (or feet, as the case may be!) 🌳
  2. Take 20 minutes and watch one of the best talks on parenting we’ve seen. It’s worth your time — particularly now, when it doesn’t take a lot to throw us off balance...

🌈 Staying Inspired and Finding joy

  1. Ok, we can’t go to restaurants but check out these free cooking lessons with local top chefs from around the US! Hard to choose which recipe to try? No problem! Cook ‘em all! 🍳
  2. Beautiful spring days call out for bubbles, but no need to stock up on bottles of the stuff — just make your own, including the wand! This sweet ‘big guy’ shows you how. 🧼

That’s it for this week. If you’ve got suggestions for us, send ‘em our way at ideas@remotelearningweekly.com. We’d love to hear from you. In the meantime, stay in, stay safe, and thank you for all that you do. 🙏
