Life and leadership often bring moments of crisis—turning points that force us to look inward and embrace change. For Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn, that moment came on October 11, 2020, during the height of the pandemic. Driving to meet Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, Quinn sensed what was coming: he was being let go.

At the time, Quinn had a 43-42 record as the Falcons’ head coach. The firing was a bitter pill to swallow.

"It sucked so bad. I was definitely mad, depressed, and upset," Quinn recently told ESPN. "I affected all of those players, their families, the coaches, their families, and the fan base when I didn't get the job done."

What felt like a devastating loss turned out to be an opportunity for reinvention—a chance to grow as a leader and a person.

After his firing, Quinn retreated with his wife to their seaside home in Oahu, Hawaii. Strict quarantine rules confined them indoors for 14 days, providing a rare opportunity for deep reflection. Quinn used this time to confront the shortcomings in his leadership and resolved to improve in key areas like delegation, staff development, and succession planning.

Drawing inspiration from basketball coaches, he adopted strategies to elevate his players’ skills. Revisiting the defensive schemes that once defined his career, Quinn refined his approach through film study and discussions with NFL colleagues. This period of stillness prepared him with renewed focus for his next opportunity as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

Quinn’s journey offers three key insights for us as leaders and decision-makers:

Now in his first year as head coach of the Washington Commanders, Quinn’s transformation is yielding results. The team is off to its best start in over two decades—a testament to the power of reinvention, patience, and resilience.

"At the time, it wasn't [a gift]. But now I realize that's exactly what it was," Quinn said, reflecting on these past four years. "Everybody has their dark spots, and that was mine. But I wanted to make sure I came out of it stronger."

As leaders, life’s dark moments can be a catalyst for transformation. Obstacles, firings, and crises—though painful—often hold hidden gifts in disguise. They push us to confront hard, uncomfortable truths, reimagine ourselves, and emerge wiser and stronger.
