fresh soil
Meet the diverse social impact leaders in The Bloom. Every week brings "fresh soil" – inspiration for your career and beyond.
What motivated you to pursue a career in Climate?
I’m a first-generation Afrolatina whose cultural and familial lived experiences are deeply intertwined with the reality of climate change. All the places I call home are either islands or coastal cities on the frontlines of climate disaster. Given my professional background in creative storytelling, I was eager to contribute my experience, skillset, and gifts toward raising awareness and contributing to climate solutions. It wasn’t until the pandemic hit that I took a hard look at where my career was headed and decided it was time to let go of anything that didn’t contribute to a purpose-driven vocation.
How did you get to where you are today in the Climate space?
I’ve consistently prayed for alignment in my creative career and have led a very intentional and purpose-driven path. When I sensed an overwhelming desire to pivot from a former dream career in advertising into climate work, I began researching, volunteering, building relationships within the space, and eventually earning paid work in climate. In my experience, no amount of hard work alone can exceed the power of relationships, community, and faith.
If you could only share one resource that would benefit people the most in learning about Climate, what would this be and why?
Beyond climate data and statistics, we need human stories that show the reality of climate and build empathy for climate justice. The As She Rises podcast is a collection of audio stories and poems that share the realities of climate from first-hand accounts of Indigenous and female voices about how climate change is affecting their communities. This podcast is an excellent way to start learning about climate action from underrepresented voices. Why did you decide to become a Climate Leader at The Bloom and what is your dream vision for those who visit the Collaborative Library? I chose to become a Climate Leader at The Bloom to help boost the signal for other creatives in climate who are eager to find community and contribute their skills to solutions. My vision for the Collaborative Library is for women to leave with life-shifting resources and genuine connections that lead to tangible opportunities for aligned work and progressive action in the climate space.

community garden
Did you know The Bloom has... a digital community?! To make sure you don't miss out, each week we round-up meaningful activities happening in the digital community:
💡Q&A with Japanese-Brazilian leadership facilitator and coach for social impact leaders:
🐝Peer-learning to crowdsource wisdom in "Hives", our sub-groups for impact niches.
Impact Comms Leaders: Do you have a go-to article or resource that you return to for inspiration in your activism?
Mayra: I always find inspiration and awe in life through the work of Ayana Young and the For the Wild, a female-led slow media collective. Here you can read the newsletter archive, as well as their podcasts and zines.
Lara: Orlowski's Chasing Coral is a documentary about bleaching corals and it keeps coming back to me. I think it's such a classic show-don't-tell case study of what communication can do and how it fits into climate activism. Watching it is what kickstarted my journey into sustainability as a communication specialist
Su: Something that inspires me is adrienne maree brown’s concept of pleasure activism. In her book, brown draws from black feminist traditions to reimagine activism as a joyful, embodied experience, rooted in healing and connection, rather than solely struggle.I try to keep this perspective in the foreground when doing communication work for activist organizations and groups, infusing our narratives with honesty, compassion, and love. By centering joy and healing, I’ve found that the stories I create resonate more deeply.
