fresh soil
Meet the diverse social impact leaders of The Bloom. Every week brings "fresh soil" – inspiration for your career and beyond by learning about our network of leaders across the globe.
I'm a Disability Inclusion Advocate and an Accessibility Professional. I am a person with Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and Stammering. My life is an intersection of being born in slum seeing poverty, being a domestic violence survivor, navigating multiple non-apparent disabilities, and being a caregiver to my chronically ill mother. My social impact story is rooted in my experiences growing up in a slum in Delhi, where I witnessed firsthand the harsh realities of climate change. Living in a community that frequently faced intense heatwaves and water shortages opened my eyes to the urgent challenges many marginalized groups endure.
During one particularly devastating heatwave, my home felt like an oven, and the struggle for access to clean drinking water was a daily battle. These experiences not only affected my physical well-being but also deepened my understanding of how climate change disproportionately impacts vulnerable populations, especially individuals with disabilities. Recognizing the lack of attention given to the disability community in climate discourse, I founded "Green Disability."

This initiative aims to elevate the voices of disabled individuals who are often overlooked in discussions about climate solutions. Despite being one of the largest minorities globally, comprising 17-22% of the population, the unique challenges we face during climate crises remain largely unheard.
Through Green Disability, we strive to bridge this gap by advocating for inclusive climate action that acknowledges the needs of all individuals. Our mission is to ensure that the disability community is actively included in climate conversations and that their experiences shape policies and solutions.
So far, "Green Disability" has cultivated a vibrant online community of over 650 members with disabilities from around the world. This engaged network actively shares experiences and insights, fostering meaningful discussions around climate justice. Additionally, our newsletter has gained over 7,000 subscribers, amplifying our message and reaching a wider audience. These connections have helped raise awareness about the intersection of disability and climate issues, driving collective advocacy for inclusive solutions.
Currently, we are focused on two key projects that aim to bridge critical gaps in understanding the impact of climate change on disabled individuals. Documenting the Challenges: We will shadow disabled individuals living in climate-sensitive areas to capture their unique experiences and challenges. This firsthand documentation will provide invaluable insights into how climate change disproportionately affects their lives, giving them a platform to share their stories and advocate for their needs.
Simplifying Research: We plan to interview researchers and distill their findings into accessible language. This project is crucial because much of the academic research on this intersection is often too technical for the broader community to understand. By making this information accessible, we empower disabled individuals and advocates to engage more effectively in climate discussions and policy-making.
These upcoming projects are vital for raising awareness and fostering inclusion, ensuring that the voices of disabled individuals are heard in climate action efforts. They represent our commitment to promoting disability justice within the context of climate resilience and advocacy.
