fresh soil
Meet the diverse social impact leaders in The Bloom. Every week brings "fresh soil" – inspiration for your career and beyond.
Hi bloomers! I'm Leonora, and I have +10 years of experience in higher education and NGOs in USA, Latin America, and Africa.I have a PhD in Comparative Literature and a background in Latin American Studies with a focus on urban memory, cultural heritage recovery, and reparations. Recently I was awarded the Vital Voices Visionary Fellowship, here's the story behind my application 🌱
Why did you decide to apply for this opportunity?
I have been following Vital Voice's work for a while and really admire the breadth and reach of their work. As an educator and global engagement leader committed to narrative change for gender and racial equity, my work is directly aligned with their mission, so that alignment was central to my decision to apply. Also, browsing the bios of the past fellows, I saw myself represented in many ways, which was an incentive, almost like an invitation to apply. But even before applying, there was the invisible labor of defining my leadership style and reflecting on my leadership journey in the context of social impact.
Could you tell us more about the fellowship?
The Vital Voices Global Partnership grew out of the Vital Voices Democracy Initiative, established in 1997 by Hillary Clinton and Madeleine Albright, following the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing to promote the advancement of women as a U.S. foreign policy goal. Vital Voices' mission is to identify, invest in and bring visibility to extraordinary women around the world by unleashing their leadership potential to transform lives and accelerate peace and prosperity in their communities. The VV Visionaries program was created to support the next generation of emerging leaders who are redefining leadership in their everyday lives. Vital Voices fellows are part of a community of over 20,000 changemakers across 185 countries, each of whom are daring to reimagine a more equitable world for all.
Tell us about the application process: what was it like, and what advice do you think would be helpful to others considering applying?
The application process was straightforward and not very time-consuming: there was not even an interview process! Knowing the organization and keeping up with their work helped me know that I was a good fit and also saved me the time of having to research the organization from scratch. Also, it was a decision to invest in my own growth, as fellowship opportunities tend to be. In that sense, viewing the process as an opportunity for professional development can be a helpful mindset.
Do you have any strategies you recommend to others looking for similar opportunities?
I take time to keep myself informed about the programs and projects of the organizations I admire. Also, connecting with the organizations' leaders on LinkedIn or The Bloom's learning community is a practice I recommend as we tend to learn not only about the latest projects but also from the perspective of people directly responsible for the work, which can offer valuable insights into the organization.

💸 Networking & Career Events
In this month's global networking event in The Bloom, we’re bringing three incredible bloom leaders to share their journeys, insights, and transformative social impact work:
🎤 Honorine UmuhireCybersecurity Program Manager: I transitioned into software development after a career as pharmacist, with a promise to not box myself in, but instead explore all facets of myself and this www_World. 🎤Daisy Mukasa Comms & Women's Health: Comms expert passionate about social development, and women’s health, with a particular focus on raising awareness about Obstetric fistula. I aim to continue creating awareness about the importance of quality maternal healthcare and enhance the quality of life of Fistula victims through dedicated programs. Currently, I'm interning at UNICEF conducting a landscape analysis of the global mental health/parenting advocacy space.
🎤Anne-Sharlene MurapaWellness Entrepreneur: As the Founder of Kurapa Moyo, a transformative community for African women, I'm redefining wellness by centering healing, joy, and embodied practices. 💸 Fellowships & Programs
Leadership Kitchen Series by Spring: One year leadership program led by social impact facilitators reflective of the diversity of changemakers in The Bloom. Meet one of the Kitchen Series facilitators, Márcia.
Hi bloomers! I'm Márcia, a Japanese Brazilian Integral Master Coach™ and Certified Integral Facilitator™ with more than 20 years of supporting social and climate justice leaders.
I started my career working as an engineer in the corporate sector. During this period, I learned that even when you set up the perfect system, everything still depends on the people actually using the system. I've been voraciously learning about human development ever since, building a rich knowledge base of how people learn, develop and evolve. After this first life as an engineer, I became an ordained Zen Buddhist monk and will be one of the facilitators of Spring's Leadership Kitchen Program. You can also check out Spring's other leadership offerings for 2025 on facilitating high impact meetings and building financial strength.
