The Intercept is facing an existential threat, and we need your help

Under a new bill, Trump could revoke the tax-exempt nonprofit status of any group by simply labeling it “terrorist supporting.”

We’ve been talking to you a lot lately about the threats facing the news industry.

Costs are rising. Big Tech companies like Google, X, and Facebook are throttling links to legitimate news sites. Billionaires like Erik Prince are weaponizing libel law to attack journalism they don’t like.

Then, a few weeks ago, our attorneys and I reviewed the threat posed by legislation currently moving through Congress that would give the incoming Trump administration the power to effectively erase The Intercept as a legal entity with the stroke of a pen.

Under this bill, Trump could revoke the tax-exempt nonprofit status of any group by simply labeling it “terrorist supporting.” They don’t have to provide evidence or even an explanation, and once that happens, the group could be unable to collect donations, get banking services, or pay staff.

It’s a death penalty for nonprofits, and given that The Intercept has spent more than a decade reporting on the abuses of the so-called war on terror, it’s not hard to imagine finding ourselves targeted.

I’m proud that The Intercept has been at the forefront of reporting on this bill, but as CEO, I need to also make sure we’re prepared for what could be a massively expensive legal fight.

That’s why I’m asking you to stand with us in the face of these threats by making a Giving Tuesday donation of $5 or more. This could be our most important Giving Tuesday fundraising drive ever, and we’re counting on your support.

Thank you,

Annie Chabel
Chief Executive Officer
