YouTube is the go-to platform for podcasts!? I'd like to say that I'm surprised, but I'm not. According to Edison Research more people listen and watch podcasts on YouTube than even Spotify and far above Apple Podcasts.

YouTube, typically known as the go-to platform for video content, has risen to the top as the most popular service used for podcast listening in the U.S. … 31% of weekly podcast listeners age 13 and up choose YouTube as the service they use most to listen to podcasts, surpassing Spotify (27%) and Apple Podcasts (15%).

The reason I'm not surprised is that I find myself, when the podcast/show has a video component, I like to watch the hosts and guests visually. There's more to see and the facial expressions during the discussions are often worth the advertisements that I get for watching YouTube without the premium membership.

Now, I don't consume ALL my podcasts via YouTube. I use Pocket Casts on my iPhone to listen to other shows that don't have a video component or when I'm on the go. I think that's why the stat is still only 31% and not 50% or more.

YouTube is the second biggest search engine after it's sibling Google. It's smart for podcasters to put their shows on the platform, especially for discovery.

I tell my Podcast Mastery clients all the time they need to have at least their audio with the album art on YouTube if not the video of their show itself.

Video used to be a barrier to entry on YouTube and in podcasting in general. But with advent of artificial intelligence-enabled editing tools like Descript, editing your podcast videos has never been easier.

Of course they aren't ruling out ads! Why would they. They're a for-profit company. The nice thing is that Bluesky is decentralized (or that's the hope) so if you don't like the server that has ads then, in theory, you can move your account to a server that doesn't.
