This is written by someone who’s not, like, a tech bro or whatever you might want to think. It’s Jennifer Pahlka, who was Deputy CTO of the US under Obama. She’s seen how the sausage gets made (and how it struggles to be unmade).

Basically it’s impossible to do. You have to have someone who’s willing to piss people off, and demand respect for what must absolutely be done. However bad you think the bureaucracy is, if you haven’t worked in it you must multiple your estimates by at least 10x, probably 100x.

“Normal people like me get scared and ashamed when we’re told we’re doing something illegal. Elon does not. I wish it were different, but perhaps the job of breaking the wall has ended up with someone who is suited to doing it. The norms that constrain even people with far more power than I have make it very difficult to break through that wall.”
