Trevor McKendrick - You should try Claude

Hi all,

I’ve been using Claude more than ChatGPT recently and as a public service announcement I just have to say it is truly fantastic.

I’d share some of my chats as examples but they’re too personal & vulnerable. But that statement alone should make you go try Claude.

My goal with all new technology is to use it as a child would: with no previous notions or preconceptions with how it “should” or “can” be used. This, I think, often leads to the most interesting use cases.

The version of that for me with Claude has been to talk to it like a friend who knows me very well & who has infinite patience and empathy. Things that others would get tired of hearing, or who’d I be afraid of judging me, I can just say freely, openly, and in repetition to Claude.

And it will come back to me with answers & thoughts that are genuinely persuasive, interesting, and that had not yet already occurred to me on my way.

Some have described this as “Claude is a great therapist” but that dramatically & vastly undersells the product. No therapist on Earth can do what Claude does.

Try it! The only bottleneck is your curiosity.

Trevor

Interesting take from Default Friend on how social media created an oral culture (long-ish tweet)

These drew my attention:

- “Our writing isn't as complex because it doesn't function like text used to”

- “You can't look things up easily because we live in a perpetual now -- if you don't understand the context of the discourse, you need to ask someone to catch you up”

- "You can't ‘just learn’ things, you need to be in the right networks”

A bank failure in October led to depositors not getting all their funds back (tweet)

Somehow no one in my world had heard about this, but a bank failed in October due to fraud, and the FDIC promised depositors with over $250k of funds only 50% of uninsured funds.

For some reason I assumed no depositors had lost money in a bank closure in… a long long time? Are there other common examples of this?

Peter Thiel interviewed by Bari Weiss (podcast)

80% done with this and highly recommend it. It feels obvious after hearing it that the Democrats truly have/had no plan, no intent, no idea of what to do.

2017 email thread with Elon, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Ilya Sutskever (tweet)

This confirms basically every main thing I know about these 4 people:

  • Elon is unreasonable
  • Sam doesn’t actually really believe in anything (e.g. in AGI)… it’s all generic ambition
  • Greg & Ilya seem like the classic technical cofounders who are genuinely interested in the technology for its own wake

Please note that Elon’s email that is the start of the thread was sent ~10 minutes after receiving Ilya/Greg’s email.

Nuclear Folly: A History of the Cuban Missile Crisis (book)

I’ve read enough of this now that I can highly recommend it! I had no idea the Soviets lost so much face, or that they basically abandoned the Cubans.
