VCs: time to set up scout programmes

European funds have taken their sweet time to test out scout and angel programmes — and there are still very few of them on the continent.

That's nuts, writes Station F director Roxanne Varza; they could be a game changer.

Scooters bounce back: the data

Scooter startups have had a terrible few months, with operations more or less grinding to a halt in most markets.

But now they're bouncing back — launching in new cities, catering for commuters and claiming not-too-shabby usage numbers.

Amy Lewin looks at who's taken the lead.

 Opinion

Forget going global

China vs US. US vs Europe. Covid-19 vs the world. It's not looking so good for companies hoping to expand globally.

So is it time for European startups to double down on their home market (or continent)?

Nicolas Colin has some thoughts.

Remote work — at the beach

Sunny smaller startup cities like Lisbon and Valencia have been luring founders for years with the promise of beach life and cheap desks.

But startup epicentres like Stockholm, Paris and London have never seen a mass exodus as a result. Until, perhaps, now.

With many startup employees expecting to work remotely for the foreseeable future, is it time to set up their home office in sunnier climes? Marie Mawad finds out.

News that matters

🦄 Jeff Bezos' 'guy in Europe', Pascal Cagni, is raising a new €80m fund. He has a knack for spotting unicorns — 30 of his firm's investments have hit unicorn status so far. Marie Mawad gets some unicorn-catching tips.

💃 StartHer and Sista merge to strengthen diversity in tech. The two French support associations for female entrepreneurs will now operate under the Sista brand, in its mission to “bring out a generation of diverse leaders.”

🥤 Putting the bubbles in Coca-Cola. Swiss carbon capture startup Climeworks, which catches CO2 from the air and stores it underground (or delivers to clients like Coke), has raised $76m.

🚄 Spanish startup Zeleros leads hyperloop development with a $7m raise. Paris to Berlin in less than an hour. That’s what hyperloop, considered the ‘fifth mode of transport’ where vehicles levitate through a network of low pressure tubes, could do.

💰 Jeff Bezos invests in London-based startup Beacon. The Amazon chief, drawing recent attention for his colossal fortune worth £116bn, is due to invest in the freight forwarding and supply chain finance firm in a $15m Series A round.

🤖 Deliveroo’s secret robot lab falls through. The food delivery company’s automation plans had included robots that fry food in an attempt to slash costs — but this particular moonshot has been shelved.

🦁 The Family is downsizing. The larger-than-life Paris-based investment firm and startup community has halved its core team and closed its London and Berlin offices, as Covid-19 hit its revenues hard.
