Turning your bedroom into a beautiful, calming space is more than just an aesthetic endeavor. A clean, relaxing place that makes you feel truly at ease—including a bed you actually look forward to collapsing into—can help make good sleep come easier.

Today we’ll walk you through a few places to start for turning your bedroom into a welcoming space that encourages rest. And stay tuned over the next six days for Sleep Week at Wirecutter. We’ll dish on actionable advice and vetted recommendations for sweet dreams—along with exclusive (!), very good deals on some of our favorite rigorously tested sleep gear.

Banish tiny annoyances.

If you’re waking up often in the night and feel yourself drawn to the same thing over and over again—a tiny flashing light or a squeaking bed frame—squash it. It sounds like pretty basic advice, but sometimes the smallest things make the difference between a restful night and a fitful one.

  • If rolling over at night to check the time on your phone inevitably causes you to doom-scroll or get caught up in your notifications, leave the thing in the living room—and get an analog bedside clock.
  • That ever-so-squeaky bed frame that creaks when you shift? The fix is likely simple and inexpensive—all you need is a few dollars’ worth of cushioning and some basic tools.
  • If you regularly wake up thanks to a sliver of light poking through your blinds, consider blackout curtains or this (admittedly bug-like, but very comfortable) silk eye mask.

Then, turn your bedroom into an oasis.

Now comes the fun part: Invest in whatever makes your bedroom feel as comfortable and calming as possible. Little luxuries can go a long way.

  • Staff writer Hannah Frye swears by this $22 mist—which smells of lavender, citrus, and eucalyptus—that turns her Brooklyn bedroom into “a spa nestled in the European countryside.”
  • Newsletters editor Brittney Ho uses a sunrise alarm clock with ambient mood lighting and relaxing soundscapes to set the mood and signal to her brain that it’s bedtime.
  • Senior staff writer Rose Maura Lorre loves this minimalist caddy for reducing the visual clutter that tends to accumulate on bedside tables: “My side of the bed now looks neatly arranged and peaceful, as any sleeping space ought to be.”

Customize your space according to your specific sleep and temperature preferences.

Arguably the most important part of the perfect bedroom is customizing the bed itself to your particular sleep needs. Take a beat to consider your sleep style: Do you sleep on your side, back, stomach, or all of the above? Do you tend to wake up at night because you’re too hot or cold? Do you like to sink into your mattress, or stay light and bouncy?

  • Silk pillowcases that tame bed head: Wirecutter journalist Caira Blackwell writes that her hair “didn’t know peace” until she started sleeping on a set of these silk pillowcases.
