Nick Santonastasso was born with one arm and no legs. As one of only four people in the world with Hanhart Syndrome, he could have seen limitations everywhere. Instead, he sees possibilities. In his mind, there’s nothing he can’t do—and he’s right because he does everything he sets his mind to.

Today, Santonastasso is a globally recognized motivational speaker and fitness icon, inspiring audiences worldwide with his message: "The biggest disability you can have is a bad mindset." His keynote speeches, including “Victim to Victor: Annihilate Excuses to Effortlessly Dominate Your Goals,” challenge individuals to abandon limiting beliefs, take ownership of their circumstances, and operate at their highest potential.

Last month, at the World Governments Summit in Dubai—a prestigious gathering of world leaders, organizations, and innovators shaping the future—Santonastasso shared a story that left him in awe. A story that revealed how language shapes culture, how words reflect values, and how true leadership isn’t just about innovation but also about seeing the humanity in others.

Having moved to Dubai four months ago, Santonastasso was at the beach when he needed to use the restroom. As he approached the facilities, he noticed three doors: one marked for men, another for women, and a third labeled “POD.” Unfamiliar with the term, he turned to a nearby worker and asked, “Which one should I use—the male restroom or the POD?”

The worker smiled and replied, “Sir, the POD restroom is for you. In the UAE, we don’t use the words ‘handicap’ or‘disabled.’ We say ‘People of Determination.’”

Santonastasso was stunned. It wasn’t just a sign on a door—it was a sign of respect. A sign of dignity. A sign that language can either limit people or lift them up.

This story is both timely and timeless. It’s a reminder that the language we use in our organizations, teams, and communities isn’t just semantics—it’s culture. It shapes how people see themselves and how they engage with the world.

As leaders, coaches, and executives, we often focus on progress—driving results, scaling businesses, winning games. But real leadership isn’t just about performance; it’s about people. It’s about fostering environments where individuals, regardless of background or ability, feel seen, heard, valued, loved and empowered.
