A question that I was perplexed by for too long: how on earth are compounding companies allowed to sell the same drug that Novo Nordisk et al.

spend billions of dollars to develop & patent?

The answer is that the FDA keeps a list of drugs for which there is a shortage. Roughly speaking and I’m no expert here, if a drug is on the list the patent is paused and ~anyone can make the drug.

In December the FDA announced they’re taking the now-famous weight loss drugs off the list.
