What’s Going Down @ Google 📊

→ As I mentioned at the top, SparkToro’s new piece- New Research: Google Search Grew 20%+ in 2024; receives ~373X more searches than ChatGPT- has a lot of people talking. TLDR: Google saw a 21.64% growth in searches, meaning Google had more than 14 billion searches/day. That’s a lot, especially compared to ChatGPT's 37.5M searches/day (max).

→ Google Ads has expanded its Performance Max negative keyword limits from 100 to 10,000. This should be available to all users within the next couple of weeks.

→ Google has also expanded its Search Max beta to more accounts, "bringing automated ad optimization to Search campaigns" with expanded search term matching, text & URL optimization, and text & URL optimization.

→ Interesting… Meta wants its advertisers to connect to Google Analytics and “advertisers who maintain a high-quality connection will get early access to new ad system updates that provided an additional 5% average increase in conversions driven by Meta in their analytics tools, in a 2025 experiment."

→ Forbes is back BTW. New recovery strategy: be Forbes. IDK, guess Google just grounded them?

→ Too many Google AI Mode fails to share them all this week. But this one is good. And this one.

Man. Becoming a lot tougher to separate the Google Section of this newsletter from the AI Section of this newsletter on the weekly.

→ Speaking of Google, AdWeek reports that Google Will Explore Ads in AI Mode, Taking Cues From Ads in AI Overviews. The article says the quiet part loud, of course, as Google’s spokesperson is openly admitting “there might be lower click-through rates as the goal of AI Mode is to answer the question as completely in the chat.” In AIOs, the ads appear AI-generated responses show up under a “Sponsored” heading and link to products.

→ And on the topic of AI Mode, Glenn Gabe’s analysis re: How Google’s AI Mode Could Be Tracked In Google Search Console offers a reasonable prediction as to how AI Mode might be tracked in GSC.

→ Breaking news: the sky is blue, the earth is round, and AI Search Has A Citation Problem. Key findings from Columbia Journalism Review’s report include:

- chatbots generally make up answers instead of declining to answer questions they can't answer accurately
- premium chatbots are more confident in their wrong answers than free ones
- many chatbots bypass Robot Exclusion Protocol preferences

Lots more, too, including “AI search engines provided incorrect answers to more than 60% of queries” (and Grok 3 answered 94% of queries incorrectly).

Big day for AI skeptics, TBH.

→ Lots of people are concerned about AI voice cloning again, BTW. We’ll see where this one goes.

→ Did you know Google owns a 14% stake in Anthropic and “is set to invest an additional $750 million in Anthropic in September”? Me neither.

Social Media Round-Up 💬

Spoiler alert: turns out this section is ALSO getting harder to separate from AI.

→ According to AdWeek, ​​Instagram Is Infusing Search with More AI, Pulling In Outside Links:

“When clicked, people are redirected to a curated For You page, highlighting New York’s running scene with AI-generated summaries from around the web, Reels, and posts. The results also include a Google search tab for deeper exploration, with follow-up queries like Best running clubs in Manhattan. Apple Maps surfaces location-based content, while a source tab provides links to the references Meta AI used.”

Just checking… did ANYONE ask for this?

→ YouTube is “testing improvements to ad suitability reviews.” Basically, any video that receives a Limited or No Ads designation will automatically be sent for additional review. All creators who monetize with ads will soon have access to this feature.

→ “Is Bluesky relevant yet?” That’s a question nobody is asking. Well, the answer, surprisingly, is “kind of.” 23.2 million total users and 3.2 million daily active users isn't so bad.
