The Forty-Five - What do you mean though Boris?

View this email in your browser
Hello,

Sad news comes this week as Manchester announces the closure of two venues – Gorilla and The Deaf Institute – which have been vital parts of the city's music scene for the last decade. As Boris announces live music could be back in some form from August 1, while simultaneously preparing us all for a second wave of the virus, it's hard to imagine a time when we can all confidently return to the pit. Only this week, Live Nation also cancelled their drive-in tours of the country: which had provided a glimmer of hope for music fans that some sense of normality was returning (if dancing around your car in a field could ever be considered normal). Patience is a virtue and all that, but sadly, patience doesn't pay the bills. We've reached out to a number of venue owners to find out exactly what Rishi Sunak's promised £1.5 billion means for them. In the case of these great Manc. venues, clearly it was too little, too late. If you've got a story to tell, get in touch with us on Twitter.
COVER STORY
Our July cover stars are a partly-clothed Haim who released their No.1 album 'Women In Music Pt. III' at the end of last month. They talk to Emily Mackay about depression, delis and why they want to get "weird in the woods" with Bon Iver. Stunning photos by Jenn Five.
The future is... digital?
Right now, music mostly exists online. Gigs have become live streams and pop stars have become... avatars? Sophie Wilson looks to the future of post-pandemic pop, investigating the rise of the digital avatar in music. It's an interesting – if slightly alarming – read.

Going it alone
Victoria Monét has been writing songs for pop's elite for years but now she's going full-pelt at being a solo artist. Jenessa Williams meet her to talk Beyoncé, being vocal about her sexuality and why her "songs should be put on a coffee table to start conversations"
