safety first (via @wwwchris)
Note from the Editor
Hi
,
Last Sunday, I hatched a plan to safely break free from the city for a few precious hours of fresh air in a sunflower field about 20 miles outside of DC. I had all the details ironed out: I just had to get to the car (masked, of course), drive there, and then I’d be socially distanced, germ-free, and looking at something other than my living room wall.
That day, the sunflower fields had different plans for me. We arrived and there were cars, people, and general chaos as far as the eye could see. We did not get out of the car. It was an immediate nope.
You know the nope: the moment you arrive somewhere and it doesn’t feel safe during COVID. To say it’s a letdown would be an understatement — especially if you spent time and energy (both precious resources these days) trying to figure out how to find some temporary joy and relief in all this. In the long-term, you know it’s the right decision. In the short-term, the disappointment is suffocating.
That day, it felt like everybody on social media had found a way to enjoy a piece of summer, while staying safe (I think? I hope?). How did they make it work? Why couldn’t I? I shared my sunflower field fail on Instagram, hoping that I might save someone else the trip an hour outside the city. Then something kind of nifty happened. People started sharing their own NOPES with me — I heard stories of beach days averted, scrapped hikes, u-turns out of the IKEA parking lot, and swift 180s when breweries weren't as distanced as hoped.
All of a sudden, a space that felt like it was taunting me with picturesque plans and beach vacations became a space for talking about what’s going on behind the scenes: a lot of tough decision-making, boundary-setting, and some disappointment when plans just didn’t work out.
After a while, I compiled the stories into a little thread of experiences called #normalizethenopes, and it made me realize something: For every beach picture or sunflower field you’re scrolling past right now, there are likely countless agonizing decisions or failed plans you’re not seeing. There’s the mental gymnastics we do every time we try to plan a safe activity outside. There's the declined invitations to a small something fun on a Saturday. And there are the big, heart-tugging NOPES, like not being in a friend’s wedding or not being able to meet a loved one’s new baby.
Many of us are up against some serious decision-making fatigue right now, whether we’re turning down plans, moving forward with them, or unable to say nope in a situation that makes us feel unsafe. So how can we speak more transparently about the stress of these decisions? By normalizing the nopes, we open the door to talking more honestly with friends and loved ones about our boundaries and the things that make us uncomfortable. Maybe in the long run, that’s a step in the right direction in how we communicate with our people.
I’m curious: Have you had a “nope” moment recently (big or small) that you really had to wrestle with? Did you feel like you could talk about it with friends? If so, I want to hear about it — you can reach me by hitting reply, or you can post about it with us on Instagram this weekend. Don't forget to add #normalizethenopes.
In hopes of less canceled plans one day,

- For an easy summer dinner you'll want to fold into the rotation... 🍝 "We made this Crispy Lemon Feta with Spiced Chickpeas and Basil Orzo from Half-Baked Harvest the other day, and it was a top-ten dinner we've ever made. It really was that good." - Alisha, GNI Team
-
If you're looking to create a calm corner... 🕯 "This is my favorite candle right now. I love the idea of having a signature scent, and this one is my new version of Le Labo's Santal 33. (I rounded it and a few of my other everyday favorites under $75 here.)" - Alisha
- An app for gardening beginners and plant pros alike... 🌻 It's no secret that our team's been taking care by taking up gardening. Candide (named after a Voltaire character!) is an online hub that's inspiring our green-thumbed pursuits — from growing our snake plants to our kitchen herbs. Candide's helping us grow with this specially curated guide made especially for GNI readers. #SPONSORSTHING

For winding down with a book each night... 💡 "I've been in a major nesting mode lately. This week, I got these gold arch nightstand lamps and I'm in love. You can touch the little knob on the base and they turn on with the perfect amount of reading-before-bed light." - Tyler, GNI Team
- If you want to brighten things up... 💅 "I spend so much of my day looking down at my hands as I type — lately I've been feeling renewed motivation to make sure I'm giving myself something cheerful to look at. Enter the bright selection at Pear Nova — Festival Fever is basically me in a bottle." - Olivia, GNI Team
-
Be ready next time Taylor Swift releases an album... 💃 "My favorite discovery of the week is that Spotify allows you to do a group listen and chat. I wish I had known this the *second* Folklore was released because my friends and I were essentially doing this via text anyway. This seems like a much better system though." 😂 - Katrina, GNI Team
-
For a fresh perspective... "It's hard to feel so confined right now, but I love this window swap tool that lets you take a peek out of a new window somewhere else in the world if you're getting tired of your own view. I suggest putting it up on your second screen if you have one at your work station." - Jenny, GNI Team

This week's challenge: Picnicking the safe way 🍋
Seeing friends (if you're ready and it's okay to do so in your area) is a little trickier these days — but finding ways to safely spend time with your people is important too. This week's summer Friday activity: Mastering a socially distant outdoor picnic in someone's backyard, with the help of Spindrift sparkling water.
What to pack:
• BYO utensils, plates, napkins, and a blanket
• Don't forget your mask (they're still important!)
• Easy-to-eat snacks like grapes, clementines, and crackers
• A simple summer salad or a sturdy sandwich
• A Spindrift Lemon (we love the refreshing taste and that Spindrift uses real ingredients) or a Sparkling Lemon Blueberry Lemonade in a Mason jar if you're in the mood for a cocktail
The secret ingredient: The best way to ensure everybody is able to have a good time is to talk about boundaries beforehand. If you're not comfortable getting closer than ten feet, say that in advance! If you'd rather not let someone in to use the restroom, make a plan ahead of time.
When you buy a Spindrift Drifter Pack* this month, you get a free pack to send to a friend (for the next time you have a socially distant picnic).
* What's included in a Drifter Pack: Every flavor of Spindrift (there are 11 flavors), plus a bonus pineapple to celebrate its recent release. 🍍

What We’re Watching: 🍿
"Killing Eve isn't new but is definitely worth a watch. The writing and character development is so strong (Phoebe Waller-Bridge wrote season 1... I should have known it'd be good!) and the first two seasons are available on Hulu to sink into right now." - Alisha, GNI Team
What We're Listening to: 🌿
(cw: police brutality)
"The storytelling in this episode of The Daily gave me chills. It's a great combination of part history lesson, part empathy-building, with a call to action and change. Sharonda Bossier's story was the reminder I needed to continue the fight against complacency (a feeling that's certainly a privilege in and of itself)." - Jenna, GNI Team
How We're Taking Care: 🥧
"I loved this article from Rachel Miller that unpacks ring theory a bit and suggests leaning on friends with bandwidth to help when you need to deliver bad news to a lot of people at once. It feels important to think about how to show up for our friends and how we'd like our friends to show up for us while we're grieving." - Tyler, GNI Team
Bonus just for fun: The new dating timeline. 😅
