Toshiba is officially out of the laptop business - The Verge

Article
  • Toshiba quietly exited the laptop business once and for all last week, ending a 35-year run by transferring its remaining minority stake in its PC business to Sharp.
  • Two years ago, Toshiba sold an 80.1 percent stake of its PC business to Sharp for $36 million, and Sharp renamed the division Dynabook.
  • Sharp exercised its right to buy the remaining 19.1 percent of shares back in June, and Toshiba released a statement August 4th that the deal was completed.
  • "As a result of this transfer, Dynabook has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Sharp," Toshiba said in a statement.
  • ComputerWorld's 20-year retrospective of the T1100 notes that Toshiba executives were unsure about the portable computer, but eventually came around, and began selling the T1100 for around $2,000.
  • During the 1990s and early 2000s Toshiba was among the top PC manufacturers, but as more players crowded into the market and with fewer unique features to offer, Toshiba's laptops waned in popularity.
  • By the time it sold its stake to Sharp, Toshiba's share of the PC market had dwindled from its 2011 peak of 17.7 million PCs sold to about 1.4 million in 2017, according to Reuters.

Capital One ordered to pay $80 million penalty for its role in a 2019 data breach - The Verge

Article
  • Capital One will pay an $80 million civil penalty for its role in a 2019 security breach that exposed the personal data of more than 100 million customers, The Wall Street Journal reported.
  • Said Capital One was aware its security practices were woefully insufficient, and that the company's board of directors "Failed to take effective actions to hold management accountable."
  • The breach happened in March and April of 2019, but Capital One was apparently not aware of the problem until mid-July.
  • That's when someone tipped the company to a public GitHub page where private Capital One data was available.
  • Authorities say Thompson was able to exploit a "Configuration vulnerability" to extract the Capital One customers' information and post it to message boards.
  • As part of a consent order from OCC, Capital One must establish a compliance committee by the end of August, which will meet quarterly beginning in October and provide regular updates.
  • Capital One did not immediately reply to a request for comment Saturday.

This Could Be the Ace in the Hole for Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 Vaccine - Motley Fool

Article
  • The healthcare giant's COVID-19 vaccine candidate could have an ace in the hole that just might make it the biggest winner of all.
  • Johnson & Johnson announced the publication of results from a preclinical study of its lead vaccine candidate, Ad26.COV2-S, on July 30.
  • There are a couple of key reasons why a "One-and-done" vaccine is preferable to vaccines that require multiple doses.
  • Second, people would be more likely to receive a single vaccine dose than they would be to get both doses of a vaccine that requires two.
  • If the single-dose vaccination works as well in humans as it did in nonhuman primates, Johnson & Johnson could easily vault from laggard to leader in the COVID-19 vaccine space.
  • Johnson & Johnson arguably remains something of an underdog in the race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Remember Aesop's fable about the tortoise and the hare? It looks like Johnson & Johnson could be the tortoise in the race to develop a COVID-19 vaccine.

Oil spill threatens ecological disaster as Mauritius declares emergency - Reuters

Article
  • PORT LOUIS - Fuel spilling from a Japanese bulk carrier that ran aground on a reef in Mauritius two weeks ago is creating an ecological disaster, endangering corals, fish and other marine life around the Indian Ocean island, officials and environmentalists say.
  • The MV Wakashio, owned by the Nagashiki Shipping Company, struck the reef on Mauritius' southeast coast on July 25.
  • "The sinking of the #Wakashio represents a danger for Mauritius," Jugnauth said.
  • Environmental group Greenpeace said the spill was to likely to be one of the most terrible ecological crises that Mauritius has ever seen.
  • France was sending specialist teams and equipment to help Mauritius deal with the spill, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
  • "We will do our utmost working with the Mauritius authorities and relevant Japanese organizations to offload the oil still in the ship, clean up the spill and safely remove the vessel," Nagashiki said in a statement.
  • Mauritius, famous for its pristine beaches, is popular with tourists who last year contributed 63 billion Mauritius rupees to the economy.
