this is how you onboard new subscribers... and convert them to paying clients

We spend a lot of time here talking about email better practices for companies that focus on monthly recurring revenue. B2C SaaS, membership sites, and subscription services are my favorite kinds of businesses to dig into because there's just so much to do with email.

You can control your customer's lifetime value with email.

That's powerful.

But I don't actually run a SaaS business.

Sure, I need recurring revenue to, like, pay my mortgage and keep buying these dang Key Lime LaCroix I'm now addicted to, but do I need proper email onboarding for my service-based business???

I'm an email marketer. A strategist. A copywriter.

Not a software company with trial users.

(^^^ I had to.)

And yet my email list and blog content brings me the majority of my clients. Clients who now have me booked into the fall.

That's the power of email.

So I figured I wanted to see what my fellow freelancers were up to out in the world of email onboarding.

I chose copywriters as a focus and, like any good strategist, I turned it into a study:

57 Copywriters, 34 Lists, And a Framework for Better Onboarding

But before you head over there... you might be wondering where exactly did I find over 50 of the top copywriters out there?

Well, The Copywriter Club Podcast, of course. In the week of their 57th episode, I went to the homepage of every copywriter guest to date and attempted to sign up for their email list. Now, I say "attempted" because 8 of these talented copywriters didn't have a prominent opt-in. Which made it super difficult to sign up for their email list. SMH.

When all was said and tallied, I subscribed to 34 email lists. Wondering why I didn't subscribe to 57 copywriters' lists?

      Here's why:

      • 1 encore guest (Ry Schwartz)
      • 4 episodes of just Rob and Kira (no guest)
      • 3 of the episode guests were not copywriters
      • 2 guests didn't have websites
      • 5 were in-house at other companies

And now that you have those details it's high time you click over to the post. Because if you cared enough to read this far you're going to want to see what else I uncovered.

      -Val

PS: My own episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast was so much fun to record. If you want to hear the ins and outs of running a super-niched business and what you can learn and apply to your own biz, you're going to want to tune in.
