Philanthropic Oath | Mice-Size Record Store | Labor Day Reading Inspiration

Hello and welcome to a new edition of the Upturn, the newsletter born out of the desire to do something that will improve the communities within our reach.

This week’s inspiration comes from Brazil, where the women’s national soccer team
has won their battle for equal pay.

Like their American counterparts, Brazil’s women’s team vocally campaigned for gender pay equality during last year’s World Cup. Their captain Marta Vieira da Silva—who holds the record for most goals scored in a FIFA World Cup—delivered an impassioned speech to inspire the next generation of players: “We're asking for support,
you have to cry at the beginning and smile at the end,” she said.

More stories about
inspiring a legacy below.

In the
Upside, a filmmaker explores gun violence in the neighbourhood she grew up in and a dermatologist seeks to upend her field’s race problem.

In
Up-And-Coming, a new initiative aims to track the carbon footprint of agricultural crops aims to give farmers a better buck for their environmental efforts, and a $100 million scholarship aims to support Black medicine students.

In
Uplift, this B&B doubles up as an animal sanctuary and a Swedish artist collective unveils its latest, mice-size creation.

Finally, the
Wrap Up offers reading inspirations to make the most of your Labor Day weekend.

Inspired by events that happened in her real life, Christina Cooper wrote, directed, produced and starred in the film South Central Love to help end the cycle of gun violence in the United States. “When people see the title of the movie they think it’s a love story, and while there is a mini love story in it, it’s not strictly that,” she says. “It’s about there needing to be more love within our community.”

Black skin is underrepresented in dermatology, with the result that people with darker skin tones tend to have worse outcomes for many conditions, including skin cancer. To try and address this, Jenna Lester, MD, dermatologist and assistant professor in the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) started one of the few clinics that specifically caters to people with darker skins.
