What The Elle - What I Told Newsweek About the Economy

What we need to do to fix the economy is obvious — at least to me. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌  ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

What I Told Newsweek About the Economy

Yesterday, Newsweek ran a cover article in which they asked 12 people to imagine receiving a phone call in January from the president (whichever president) asking, “What's your best advice for me right now on the economy?”

I was one of those people, and my advice stems from the rock-solid belief that, as we like to say here at Ellevest: Nothing bad happens when you get more money in the hands of women.

My advice: Keep women in the workforce, and bring the millions of them who have left in 2020 back.

That will have the greatest leverage in driving the economy.

And with one in four women thinking about downshifting or quitting her job during the pandemic ... with 865,000 women having left the workforce just last month ... with the unemployment rate so much higher for women than for white men (and especially for Black and Latinx women, and for women with disabilities), the numbers are too alarming to focus on anything else.

They also asked me what one thing I’d recommend doing to make it happen.

Well, I have a few thoughts on that, too.

Read it over at Newsweek.

A tweet by Jessica Mason Pieklo that says “It’s wild to me that in 2020 I’m giving my daughter the same advice about having your own money and plan that my grandmother who was born before women could vote gave me”

By the Numbers: Loans to women-owned businesses

Last week, we learned that the Treasury Department privately encouraged banks to prioritize Paycheck Protection Program loans to existing clients, which harmed businesses run by women and / or BIPOC people.

While women own 42% of all US businesses, only 16% of PPP loans went to women-owned businesses.

Meanwhile, after hitting an all-time high in 2019, venture capital funding for women-run start-ups has dropped in 2020 to a three-year low. (Why? Likely a combo of the women having to take on more family responsibilities and cautious investors staying close to their own existing networks in a crisis year.)

And a study by the Female Founders Alliance of women and nonbinary people with “high entrepreneurial aspirations” found that 51% of them have scrapped their plans to start a business … with most of them citing lack of funding.

“Sometimes it just helps to just see somebody that looks like you.”

What we’re reading, watching, and talking about

A new study found that most people are OK with “ambitious women.” Great news, right? Well … not exactly. People are OK with some types of ambition but not others, so exactly how to show ambition is yet another tightrope women leaders have to walk.

OK, but maybe the real reason women don’t succeed is because they’re not confident enough, right? (We hear this one all the time.) Nope. Another study found that confidence is absolutely linked to better prospects for promotion at work … but only for men.

Most of the early composers of video game music were women, and they shaped the industry — but haven’t gotten the accolades that the male composers did. Meet them now.

Carol Fishman Cohen, the founder of iRelaunch, wrote a letter with some great advice to all of the 865,000 women who left the workforce last month — from a smart perspective on the cost of a career break to lots of things you can do when you’re ready to come back.

Lauren Fleshman was an elite runner before the sport’s body-shaming culture took a toll. Now, she’s a feminist running coach with a training model that puts women’s needs first.

Do more for your money and career.
