Art in Mexico protests, Lady Gaga’s new film on mental health, Freelance copywriter at Parade

Welcome to The Bloom, a newsletter to bloom into your best self! Enjoy these small seeds of joy including empowering job opportunities and inspiring news: all from an intersectional feminist lens.

Feminist activists take over Mexico Human Rights Office: On Sept. 4, a group of activists protesting the national femicide crisis seized the human rights office in Mexico City in support of two mothers who refused to leave the day before. More than a week later, the activists are still in the government building – and they’re using art as a weapon, painting over all-male portraits of historical figures hanging in the building. >> Full Story

In memory and celebration of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (notorious RBG ❤️ ): Ginsburg's legacy is only matched by the gravity of her loss in this moment. She was the architect of the legal fight for women's rights in the 1970s, served 27 years on the nation's highest court, became its most prominent member, and in her 80s became a legal and feminist icon. Here are some of our favorites from RBG: "Advice for Living", an opinion piece from Ginsburg in NYTimes (2016), her interview reflecting on 9 female classmates at Harvard, and On the Basis of Sex – a movie about RBG's life written by her nephew. >> Full Story

When women lead protest movements: Over the past decade, women have stood out as symbols of mass movements. They were a driving force behind demonstrations against a new citizenship law in India, the 2018 protests against President Bolsonaro in Brazil, and many of the revolutions culminating in the Arab Spring. According to Harvard research in a forthcoming book on women in protests, as many as 70% of nonviolent campaigns from 2010 - 2014 included moderate/extensive numbers of women at the front lines. Such campaigns not only prove to be much larger, but also more successful. >> Full Story

After nearly a half a decade in Salvador, Brazil – once one of the largest slave-trade ports in the Americas –a photographer offers her intimate look at a city where the act of celebration is deeply ingrained. Her photo essay is a beautiful depiction of how, despite centuries of repression and collective trauma, African culture thrives in Salvador, finding expression in the city’s Afro-Brazilian musical, culinary, artistic and literary traditions.

Queer heroes fight a repressive regime in the dystopian comic SFSX (Safe Sex), the nexus of a queer, kinky, sex-positive world under attack.

@fashiongrannies is a group of women in China, all over 60, who met and became close friends during a modeling training course 20 years ago. Their TikTok videos are viewed by millions around the world; a 15-second clip of them walking in Sanlitun, one of Beijing's busiest districts, was viewed more than 50 million times in a day! (also Oprah is a huge fan)

A fascinating new photo essay from India on "doing nothing as a radical feminist act."

Lady Gaga drops a new short film about her mental health: "It's the poetry of pain. The film is very personal to me, my experience with mental health and the way reality and dreams can interconnect to form heroes within us and all around us."

In Epidermis, a collection of portraits “highlights and showcases the skin of women less often seen” – women with acne, rosacea and eczema – and criticises the skin-shame society pushes on women.

BBC's comedy sketch She’s Asking For It uses humor to push back against the common notion that clothing choice indicates how they want to be treated, often resulting in victim-blaming survivors of sexual assault. The sketch features 3 women taking the  “asking for it” concept to a new level: dressing up in business attire means you’ll get a job while dressing up in vacation attire means you can take a tropical trip without taking time off from work. The clip highlights the ridiculousness and double-standard of the notion in a funny, light-hearted way.

"If my shine bothers you, that's not my problem" – @monicastylemuse is a beauty expert and social media star amplifying the voices of Afro-Latina women.

A few weeks ago, Amber, one of our writers at The Bloom, shared a beautiful reflection about how @bodyposipanda helped her overcome an eating disorder. The topic resonated with many of you so we wanted to take a moment to share another incredible resource: EDify Talks.

EDify Talks is a new NGO run by women, all with a shared dream to teach kids and adolescents about eating disorders and other mental health related issues. Their mission is to educate the community, diversify the narrative, and end the stigma around eating disorders – and they especially hope to empower young girls and women to see the beauty in their bodies – ones deeply affected by diet-culture and its unrealistic, unhealthy beauty standards.

One of the things we love about EDify Talks is their monthly magazine. Each month, they pick a different theme and anyone to submit art or writing. This month's theme is Recovering (from an eating disorder or disordered eating) – and submissions are open! We're also very appreciative of their Instagram @edifytalks, with meaningful posts debunking myths and offering practical advice on how to be a better ally 🙌
