U.S. Shatters Record With More Than 100,000 New Covid Cases In One Day

In spite of President Donald Trump's continued claims that the country is "rounding the corner," the United States reported 100,233 new Covid-19 infections on Friday, the most ever reported by any nation in a single 24-hour span, with coronavirus outbreaks engulfing large swaths of the country and 48 of the 50 states trending in the wrong direction.

KEY FACTS

•	According to a New York Times database, 16 states reported a single-day record high for new cases on Friday: Iowa, Kentucky, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Montana, Illinois, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Oregon, Kansas, Ohio, Colorado and Maine.

•	Fourteen states also reported their highest number of Covid-19 hospitalizations on Friday, as more than 46,000 Americans are currently hospitalized due to the virus (an increase of more than 50% since the end of September).

•	At the start of last week, the U.S. had never registered more than 75,000 new infections in a single day, yet the country is averaging more than 84,000 new cases per day this week.

•	The total number of infections in the U.S. soared past 9 million on Friday, just 14 days after the country reported its 8th million case.

272: According to Reuters research, for every 10,000 people in the United States, over 272 Covid-19 cases have been reported and about seven people have died. In Europe, there have been 127 cases and four deaths per 10,000 residents.
