Mind On Their Money

More than 250 billionaires and spouses of billionaires have made contributions to either Joe Biden or Donald Trump’s campaigns ahead of Election Day. Here are the billionaires that built their businesses together and are spending their riches on opposing candidates.

Trump is set to become the only billionaire to have spent $0 on a presidential run. Ross Perot, Tom Steyer and Michael Bloomberg pumped a combined $1.5 billion into their campaigns.

A Biden win and split Congress is Wall Street’s best-case scenario, now investors turn focus to these three big issues.

Democrats raised $400 million to unseat Republicans in major Senate races. It didn't work.

A constitutional amendment that would have raised Illinois’ flat income tax was rejected by voters, after the state’s billionaire governor and its wealthiest resident each spent more than $50 million backing opposite sides of the campaign.

Lindsey Graham
of South Carolina received a last-minute boost from out-of-state billionaires in early October. Here are the billionaires who spent big to keep Graham in the senate.

These billionaires want to abolish the cash bail system in California—for good. Some of the biggest billionaire supporters hail from out of state, including Texas and Oklahoma.

America’s ten richest people are $28 billion richer as election bolsters big tech prospects. Tech stocks led the market higher on Wednesday, adding billions to the fortunes of America’s richest people.

Unemployment claims remain above pre-pandemic levels with no more federal aid in sight. Weekly jobless claims fell only sightly last week, as the labor market’s recovery stalls.

Citing the ongoing risk to the economy caused by the pandemic, the Federal Reserve is keeping interest rates near zero and chair Jerome Powell still thinks the U.S. needs more stimulus for a full recovery. The day after the election, the U.S. recorded an all time high of 103,000 new Covid-19 cases.

With eviction bans set to expire, Jared Kushner-owned company has moved to evict hundreds of out-of-work tenants. Experts say tens of thousands of eviction notices have bottlenecked in local courts and could lead to families across the country being forced to move or on the streets.

Global Economy

The fortunes of China’s wealthiest surged amid a pandemic-driven boom in e-commerce, tech IPOs and—no surprise—healthcare.

France, Italy and Germany post new coronavirus case records as Europe calls for new crackdowns. Greece is one of the latest European nations to go into lockdown.

As China reports low numbers of new coronavirus cases, it’s shutting its borders to countries still struggling with outbreaks, including the U.K. and India.

The president of Kosovo has resigned to face criminal charges from war against Serbia. Prosecutors claim the president and nine others are “criminally responsible for nearly 100 murders.”

Canada has reported its first case of the rare H1N2 swine flu. The case is not only the first time this swine flu variant has been found in Canada, but just the 27th such case detected worldwide since 2005.
