Hey y’all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. The comedy of survival.

  2. Something I haven’t done in 14 years: I’m reading a brand-new Edward Tufte book!

  3. I’ve fallen into some bad habits in the past eight months, so I’m reading James Clear’s Atomic Habits. (He has a wildly popular newsletter you might want to check out.)

  4. Eye candy: I don’t know much about animator Hoji Tsuchiya, but I dig what I’ve seen of his work. He’s doing a Zoom presentation soon about how he works.

  5. Ear candy: Kurt Wagner of Lambchop’s “Recent Departures” playlist of his musical idols lost in 2020.

  6. TV: Like everyone else, I’m watching season four of The Crown. (If you are tired of watching stories about despicable people, I recommend the wonderful Ted Lasso.)

  7. Movies: Richard Brody’s 62 films that shaped the art of documentary film-making. (I’m embarrassed by how many of these I haven’t seen, but I especially love F For Fake and Grey Gardens.)

  8. Bric-à-brac: unreal footage of Mars, the field of cymatics, a Paul Klee drawing on Antiques Roadshow, Luigi Colani's typewriter stations, and this diner mug from the Austin Public Library, which is at the very top of my Christmas list.

  9. A belated happy 100th birthday to painter Wayne Theibaud, who still works every day! (Living by Hockney’s motto: “I’ll go on until I fall over.”) Wish I could see his retrospective at the Crocker Art Museum — I saw a bunch of his work there on book tour in 2014. (Guess I’ll settle for the catalog.)

  10. This weekend is the last chance to get signed and personalized copies of my books before the holidays. I'll sign as many as you buy — Keep Going in particular would make a great gift for your team at work! Bookpeople ships worldwide. Do it!
Thanks for reading. This newsletter is free, but not cheap. To show your support, forward it to someone who’d like it or buy a book, buy some of my favorite gear (I get a cut), or buy a t-shirt.

If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can read previous issues and subscribe here.

xoxo,
