The Sanctity of the NFL Schedule Is Straining Its Teams

On October 13, as the Titans dealt with the NFL’s first significant COVID-19 outbreak, commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to teams drawing a line between competitive issues and medical concerns when explaining the league’s rationale in determining whether a game would be moved.

The Mavericks Are Done Coming Up Short

The Mavs learned the right lesson from the Lakers’ championship run. As big as Los Angeles was up front last season, its defensive dominance began with its size on the perimeter. The Lakers didn’t start anyone shorter than 6-foot-5 in the playoffs. They shrunk the court with waves of long and athletic defenders around their two stars. Dallas now has the same kind of roster after some smart offseason moves.

The Feud at the Center of Citizen Kane Is a Classic Hollywood Tale

Netflix/Ringer illustration

Herman J. Mankiewicz, a reporter turned critic turned playwright turned screenwriter, helped shape the sound of classic Hollywood movies and lured other New York wits to California to do the same. It’s impossible to deny Mankiewicz’s importance, yet it’s also impossible to talk about him—or to depict him on film—without reigniting the battle fought about him by successive generations of partisans.

The conflict revolves around the question of who deserves credit for writing Citizen Kane, the 1941 masterpiece directed and produced by and starring a 25-year-old wunderkind named Orson Welles, who receives a cowriting credit alongside Mankiewicz. Their shared title card, however, only suggests settled business. Attempts to assign authorship to a film frequently cited as one of the greatest ever made (and often the greatest ever made) both predate Citizen Kane’s release and will likely flare up for as long as anyone cares about Kane—which is to say, as long as anyone cares about movies.

NFL Power Rankings: The Packers and Titans Have Offenses That Can Crush Almost Anyone

Getty Images/Ringer illustration

The Week 12 slate was a weird one, but thanks to the Chiefs’ impressive win over the Buccaneers, the Steelers’ postponed matchup with the Ravens (which I’ll have to address next Tuesday), and the Saints’ easy victory against the quarterback-less Broncos, the top three teams in my rankings held steady from last week. The rest of the NFL’s elite tier, however, got a good shake-up: The Titans dominated the Colts to leap into the no. 4 spot while sending Indy tumbling down the ranks; the Bills knocked off the Chargers to jump up to no. 5; the Packers beat up on the hapless Bears on Sunday Night Football to rise to no. 6; and the Rams lost a tough one to the 49ers to fall out of the top group.

The Undoing Gave the People What They Wanted

HBO/Getty Images/Ringer illustration

There are a dozen reasons why the finale of The Undoing was not a great episode of television. (This piece is about to go into detail about the finale of The Undoing. Spoiler-phobes, close the tab now or forever hold your peace.) For one thing, it’s 67 minutes long, a slack and bloated end to an already distended story. For another, its central mystery turned out not to be a mystery at all—the lack of surprise was arguably a surprise in itself, but still disappointing to thousands of Reddit sleuths. Mostly, The Undoing’s finale underwhelmed because The Undoing itself underwhelmed, botching the foolproof formula of movie stars, gilded scenery, and twisty plot with a final product that’s dramatically inert. Great coats, beautiful coats!
