Just last week, Sylvia Kwan, Ellevest’s chief investment officer, was being talked at, in a call we were both on, on the topic of investments. I messaged Sylvia to say that this person probably didn’t realize she has a PhD. From Stanford. On top of a BS from Brown in computer science and applied math. She’s also a chartered financial analyst. And, more recently, a chartered alternative investment analyst.

So Sylvia is actually Dr. Sylvia Kwan, PhD, CFA, CAIA.

Who was being talked at last week about her life’s work.

During that call — sort of acting like I was joking, but definitely not really joking — I messaged her that we should start always using the Dr. in front of her name, given the gender biases and expectations around women that still exist … and that result in men getting introduced by their professional titles three-quarters of the time, while women’s titles are used less than half of the time. And maybe particularly given how self-effacing Sylvia is.

So I pretty much spit out my coffee when I picked up the Wall Street Journal on Saturday morning and saw the opinion piece headlined “Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an MD,” which tried to publicly shame Dr. Jill Biden into dropping her well-earned academic title and addressed her as “kiddo.” An article written by someone who has not endured the rigors of earning an EdD (as Dr. Biden has) but bizarrely rants about declining standards for honorary degrees (which have exactly nothing to do with Dr. Biden’s degree).
