I’m going to be honest with you all; I have a problem. I’ve always been someone who is good at growing revenue of the products I work on. For example, I cofounded PubLoft which grew from $0 to $24,000 in 7 months + I grew Forward Thinking City from $0 to $1,500 MRR in 2 months. The issue is that during these time frames, the person getting the value from what I was doing was the one paying, priced according to the value that was being provided. So the “sell” was pretty easy. But right now, I am working on a very complicated business.
Why So Complicated?
I am helping great founders raise money from great investors. The issue here is that the business model for this skill is usually equity based. So if I was using that business model, I would get equity in a startup, and then I help/hope other people get equity in it too, at a higher valuation. AKA, it’s not cash based. And if I was investing in startups, I would probably making a living off of management fees or living off of money I previously made. But I don’t have either, and I still need to eat. So in order to bring in revenue, the next logical conclusion is to charge the VCs for access to founders or charge the founders for fundraising help.
The issue with that is that most VCs don’t trust my filter or introductions yet, and charging them money would shut off the opportunity to build trust. If I charged founders to raise, many of them would be be skeptical, and I haven’t built up enough trust with the founder market to charge meaningfully. I do charge $20/mo for access to events and office hours, but I am obviously doing a very poor job of capturing value if that’s all I am making from facilitating transactions of millions of dollars.
The Problem
So If I can’t charge VCs or founders meaningfully because there isn’t enough trust built up, how do I make money while I build that trust? Well, this question has been keeping me up. I am making okay money from the event subscription but there needs to be a different, more scalable way to make money.
Usually, I would be able to figure out the right business model here and we’d be well on our way. The problem I have is that I am so busy managing the complexity of this market that I don’t have the energy to figure out how to find a model that makes decent money, consistently. Growing revenue for a product is a full time job, and I already have five of those.
With that said, we don’t have unlimited runway and we need to figure out a scalable revenue channel in Q1 of 2021. So, I am taking this challenge to the internet to see if any of you can help me find the answer.
The Bounty
I need help discovering knowledge that I currently don’t have. This knowledge is how to make money off of valuable data, when I don’t have time to figure out who it’s valuable to or how valuable it is. I am hiring someone to figure out the latter part.
