What Does Schalke Think of Matthew Hoppe?
Thank you for subscribing to No Grass in the Clouds! If you’d like to become a paying subscriber, then please follow the green button: I reached out to Schalke for comment on Matthew Hoppe’s hat trick, but they had Monday off, so I didn’t hear from them before yesterday’s newsletter was published. They did get back to me after it was published, though. Normally, this would just go into a notebook (or a notes app or an email archive) somewhere and maybe get filed away for a future piece, but why wait? This is a newsletter; it’s beautiful; there are no rules! So, here’s what Gerald Asamoah, Schalke’s u-23/reserve team manager, told me about their sudden teen sensation. Beyond the goal-scoring, what was the most impressive part of Hoppe’s performance over the weekend? Matthew impressed me overall. Firstly, because he acted thoughtfully in all three goals and produced a strong running performance. But also because he manages to keep developing. He manages to do that because he's able to constantly challenge himself. That's extremely important and you've seen where that can lead. That's why Matthew, apart from his three goals, is in all respects an inspiration for all young players in general and in particular for my players from the U23s. Once again they have seen that the path to the professional team is always open to them — perhaps at Schalke traditionally even more than at many other clubs. Compared to other players you’ve seen at his age at his position, is there anything about the way he plays the game that makes him unique? Until a few weeks ago, Matthew was still part of our U23 squad before he was called up to the first team. After the 4:0 win against TSG Hoffenheim at the latest, I have to say: quite rightly! I know his weaknesses, but I also know what makes him special. A strong will in front of goal and his calmness. When he had a chance, he didn't just shoot at the goal and hope that the ball would go in. And that’s not a matter of course for such a young player.
